the thin line between scary and grotesque

adapted from Film Incoherence:

"Ju-on 2" (The Grudge) : twice I saw the film in a theatre, twice the audience burst out laughing at the wig sliding across the tatami ("Megumi" section). Really, they should have edited this bit out altogether and cut straight to the murdered girl emerging from the floor.

note to the American producers who are probably remaking the film for junk-food gobbling audiences as we speak...

i thought that was really scary... at first it struck me as hilarious and cheesy, but all of a sudden i found myself biting my nails... i dunno...

reply

Yeah, I thought that was done pretty poorly. The only thing that was remotely "disturbing" about that scene was the squishy sound the wig made. But that just made me think, "Ew" and then sit back and giggle slightly as the wig made its way closer to Megumi (who, I think, could easily have stood up and jumped over the wig...why she didn't try this is beyond me...)

I just saw the film, finally, with it only having come out on DVD in the UK a couple of weeks ago. That scene is quite interesting, in that it does make you laugh, before suddenly becoming really quite scary. A part of me thinks that the wig is deliberately funny, to put one in a false sense of security, before unleashing the real scare. I like that scene...

Have a nice day :)

Aw man, you all suck. That scene was awesome.

You got to see this in the theater? Lucky. I badly need to go to Japan so I can see their horror movies in theaters.

No disrespect intended, sir, but shove it up your ass!
