Or maybe SS senses its going to be another Crystal Skull disappointment (which for me would be great as I love Skull!), plus I don't think Lucas is involved this time so maybe didn't fancy doing it without his input (and he's directing West Side Story..so he probably hasn't got the time/doesn't fancy another crazy Jurassic/Schindler style back to back shoot), also don't think he was even that keen on doing Indy 4 let alone a 5 (and probably especially not after Indy 4 was deemed a disappointment), the only reason to do it would be to sort of atone for 4 and someone else can do that

a post Logan Mangold is a pretty decent replacement tho yes (Mangold was supposed to do the Boba Ffett movie before Solo bombed so he is probably already signed up to Disney/Lucasfilm to direct something). would've thought JJ would be the more obvious choice..(although after TROS I doubt he was even considered) .

Mangold isn't my first choice but I'm surprisingly alright with that. If Spielberg's heart isn't in it, they should give it to someone else. Of course they imo should quit while they're ahead but whatever.

other choices that were probably considered by KK/Disney/Lucasfilm - Jon Favreu, Joss Whedon, the russos, ron howard, garth edwards, joe johnson, colin trevorrow

Favreau has done great with The Mandalorian. So he’d been my first choice. I’m shocked Abrams is not in talks.

Favreau did Iron Man 2 and Cowboys/Aliens which would probably be enough to take him out the running

Pre Episode 9 JJ might've been but I'm guessing the mixed reaction and sounds like there was alot of crap going on behind the scenes regarding the direction of the film (or maybe there wasnt who knows) .. also by now he's pretty much known as kind of a corporate fan film maker,. like his Wars and Trek movies are sort of like 'ticking all the boxes' in order to appease fans and like that's what you'd get if a fanboy had 200m budgets for fanfilms to put on youtube , idk.. lacking originality I guess? Too homagey? (also see his Spielberg homage Super8) and maybe that's not what is needed/wanted for Indy 5?

Whereas Mangold wowed everyone with Logan (and Indy 5 will no doubt be a similar 'one last adventure' finale) and he's coming off oscar nom'd Ford v Ferrari which everyone liked (and if course he has an impressive catalogue of solid 'proper' old school type movies that aren't just superhero/SF sequels genre: Copland, 310 Yuma, Walk The Line etc)

Ah, I'm thinking that Spielberg must not be excited/impressed by the script. Still will watch it though.

Spielberg and Lucas make everything for like five years olds and they need to go.

We don't need Jar Jar Binks and we don't need Fucking "Mutt" swinging through the trees.

It's been delayed again. I don't see this happening.
