I'm confused about Ox's journey

Indy theorizes (correctly) that Ox had discovered the Crystal Skull in Peru, took it all the way to Akator (Indie asks Ox how he escaped the guardians since he had been there before), but upon upon learning that the Russians were also looking for it, he travels all the way back to Peru to put it right where he found it.

That makes no sense at all! It's like that joke where a blonde was trying to swim across the English Channel (which is about 21 miles), she swam for 20 miles, got tired and swam back.

If Ox had reached Akator, why didn't he just return the skull? Surely it would have been much safer there than taking it all the way back to Peru.

If memory serves correctly, Ox couldn't find Akator, so he returned the skull where he found it (to keep it out of the Russians' hands).

Ox's whole story about Akator and the skull never really made sense to me either. I've seen the movie several times and each time I feel like I almost understand it, and then it collapses upon itself and I'm back to square one.

People complain about this movie's many flaws, but hardly anyone touches upon this and this is easily top 3 biggest problems I have with the movie.
