Am I missing something?

I did not particularly like this movie. It seems like a lot of people really enjoyed it. What am I missing? If someone wants to break it down and tell me what this movie is all about then please do so. Otherwise, to me, it was a very plain and unoriginal story. Plus, I though it was supposed to be a comedy. The only joke was on me for paying money to see it.

i watched this movie tonight because it got a high score on imdb and some ppl were tauting this as next best brazilian movie after city of god. i too think i'm missing something. the first act was excellent and clever at times but it failed as soon as the protagonist started delving into other side of the law with counterfeting and bank robbing. it just became another type of movie altogether, abandoning a set of rules it set in the beginning. this could have been a small, very sweet story about someone who's stuck in deadend job and finds love. judging from the first 30 minutes it had a lot of potential... pity. a score of 4 for me.

seems like someone can't handle plot twists

reply

Plot twists are well and good, but the first half of this movie was not plot driven, it was character driven. I thought the last act of the film took on such a wild tangent, that I was convinced the end would reveal that the robbery and lottery win and subsequent troubles with the drug dealer and Silvia's father would all be a story that the lead character drew, because of all the stories he had done earlier.
I liked the movie, but I thought it started off great, and then turned very strange.

You're missing something probably, but that's your problem.
Who cares that you thoght it was a comedy ? You could think whatever you want, duh.
You don't say why you don't like it so I don't know what you're missing. Just that you thoght it was a comedy, lol.
I think it's pathetic these kind threads. Didn't like, have nothing to say about it, move forward, don't open a thread.

reply

Indeed. Some times foreign films go right over peoples heads, and this seems to be the case. But, if you didn't get it, then you didn't get it.

reply

The film was derivative of of Alfred Hitchcock's rear window, and Tay Garnett's "The postman always rings twice" Obviously the director is a classic film buff who watches Turner Classic movies a lot.

The boy thought he was stalking the girl when she turned the tables on him and tricked him into killing off her pervert old dad.

It was also a homage to the French new wave, ala " Band Apart"with the boy as the French actor Belmondo, it was a total fantasy satire not meant to be taken seriously.

I would like to see the first version which wound up on the cutting room floor, thrown into the river. That version showed the whole thing was a fantasy dream which the copy boy had made up into a graphic novel.

Of course anyone who has not grown up in the Portuguese language culture could not understand a single frame of it and should not be watching the film at all.

It was way fun, a good way to kill a Sat night when you are way off in the boondocks and have a stack of Netflix movies to go through.

I give it two thumbs up if that's not offensive in Brazil? Then I apologise for the gesture.

reply

I kind of agree with you. The movie is entertaining but somewhat flawed.

"You keep him in here, and make sure HE dosen't leave!"

reply

Don't forget that humor, especially sutle humor, gets lost in translation and cultural differences.

reply

Exactly... I'm Spanish speaker from Brazil neighbour Venezuela, I saw the film at Portuguese with Spanish captions... and I found this film a very good one, dealing with the hard really of been middle class living in a developing country. You get lost a lot with the translation, the way that they speak and the words that they use are totally related to the films humour.
I think if you can not get immerse in the characters world (or at least try to understand it) you would not get the whole movie.

reply

Maybe I got it because I can relate to it more.
I'm a broke college guy who always looked at girls from afar but when it came time to talk to them all I could say was that I worked at blockbuster, with not much else to say for myslef and wanted him to suceed.
I thought it was acted pretty well and was touched by the love story.

Most people who will not like this movie will be American. Not that I have anything against Americans, I love America and Americans...and not because most of IMDB users are American.

Most people who will not like this movie will be American, because there are many cultural subtleties that you just won't catch IF you've never lived abroad for a long time.

Whether you find a movie funny or not has something to do with your taste, and your taste, although not entirely composed by your home culture, is definitely strongly influenced by it.

People will like a movie like "city of god" because it's more mainstream. It's a very good movie as well, but a movie like this one will appeal to a special crowd, ie: people who enjoy the magical realism genre..."Amélie Poulain" is a good example.

If you didn't like this movie, you probably won't like Amélie, and the inverse also holds true.

In any case, I think we all agree that it is a touching love story between two exceptional and yet ordinary individuals.

I find the ethnic diversity of Brazil mind-boggling, the culture, the contact between people. I loved this movie.

I couldn't take my eyes off of it, once I saw a minute of it on tv. I missed the beginning by 5 maybe 10 minutes and it was on at 11:40 to 1:15 pm -in the middle of the night.
I needed to sleep badly and have already seen one show that night so I thought I switch channels for another 5 minutes and quit. I came across O homem Que Copiava on a german satellite program and couldn't (quit that is). I was caught by all of it, the faces, the pace (just when the looking-walking-runnig-smiling scenes were a bit too much the editor freshened it up with cut-scenes or comics, cute!), and the LANGUAGE. Yess, man! I speak italian like most people here close to the border to Italy and portuguese sounds like a funny italian accent at first. I admit I don't like it always, for example I couldn't take a verbal fight seriously if it was in portuguese :) sorry (for my lack of knowledge or narrow point of view).
But in this movie it sounded so warm, lovable.
And the plot was surprising enough to me, I appreciated the multiple twists at the end.

You know what, I was gonna say something, but you already summed it up for me........

Why do people think that just because I'm an American I won't like it. That's selfish. I'm from farm town, Iowa. I bought the DVD and I love it. Brazilian commenters here think I won't get some of it because I don't understand the culture. I actually found a lot in this film I can personally relate to. About the only thing I questioned: is your bus system free?

reply

I am from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Europe, and totally love this film. We are more alike then people might think. Now that's a good thing.

Well,i think that's a great BRAZILIAN movie...But if it wasn't brazilian i wouldn't like it...did you understand what i mean?
Here in Brazil...i think movies sometimes are 'too brazilian',too 'cult'...or wharever.
what i liked in that movie was...it isn't too Brazilian, and it's not boring...(like those 'soup operas' here, and other dumb movies...you don't know them because they don't even get 'out of here')

Oh,and for those who liked City Of God and want something brazilian and cool...i think THE MAN OF THE YEAR is a great option, nothing to do with City Of God...

But it's pretty cool too....

reply

yea this is a cool film, not as violent as man of the year or city of god, however i didnt like the idea that the main actors turned out to be killers, those characters didnt seam capable of being killers

reply

eddizle, yes, it was shocking, but you must not see it too "americanized" I mean black/white, this is wrong, period, basta. But instead, it raises a very old (not really old but I don't know the right word for "basic human problem") question:
are we/you capable of killing? That is, under what circumstances etc. I'm sure we could write comments about that right here and fill a book within one week (taking only good comments!) but this movie shows all the aspects of this problem (without the solution) in a compressed way. Which I appreciate.
I mean, they killed because they perceived the father as a tyrant. But then to what purpose? To lead a life in luxury or simply to survive, or to breathe more freely? I sthat ok? Her father didn't know any better than to be this way, he probably wasn't a bad person or maybe he was but hides it and so on... that's what we could write about a lot I suppose :)

I for one believe this to be a remarkable foreign film, just caught here in Australia on late night SBS. I love foreign films but this one simply stood out, very entertaining to watch.
