Did they just run out of budget and called it quits?

Because with that ending, there's just no way you'd write a script like that. Although, I gotta say that all of a sudden wtf ending was the best thing in this movie. It made me actually appreciate having seen it. Can't say that anything else in the movie made it worth it, other than Casper Van Dien's pretty face.
