Depp's Worst Performance?

I can't think of a worse one offhand, and I've seen "The Lone Ranger" and "The Tourist"! Well, the first half of "The Tourist". Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater, I think Depp has given some terrific performances over the years - but nobody can say he's consistently great. He's done everything from great ("Ed Wood") to good ("From hell") to disappointing ("Sweeney Todd") to awful (see above), but I think this movie might be his worst work of all time.

It's not a lazy or incompetent performance, it's a badly conceived one - his Willy Wonka is so weird and spacey that the idea of letting him mentor a child is terrifying! Not to mention that Deep Roy totally steals the film from him, I don't recall another movie where he lost out to a supporting player.

I would have cast Michael Keaton instead.

Funnily before Tim Burton was involved (and immediately cast Johnny Depp to whom he is close) Keaton was the original choice for the role. Interestingly, he has been directed by Burton in the first two Batman films as the lead hero

The Tourist I think is worse since Depp looks so bored and his character is so uninteresting in that movie.

Depp gets off on trying to play oddball, eccentric characters...and it has gotten tiresome (along with his phoney accent).

Good point - from what I saw of that movie Depp was at his worst - bored, fake, using the same mannerisms we've seen a bazillion times before.

Of course I didn't even make it through one hour of that mess, for all I know he improved before the end, but that doesn't seem very likely.

reply

Nope. He's flat the whole time even after the big "twist".

I liked Depp in this.
