Zi makings?

Does anybody know the idea behind the Zi markings all of the characters have? They remind me of the ones from the .hack series, especially .hack//SIGN, and I was wondering if there's any kind of connection or if they're just there. I always wondered if they occured naturally or if they are aquired.
