I don't know if I'm just dense or what, but I had a hard time understanding why on Earth Vittorio felt the way he felt for Rita. Was it something from the novel that was missing in the series? I haven't read the novel, but someone who has and has watched this, could you explain? I can't interpret why he would be attracted to her. What was the message/theme of this movie? Thanks for your help.

maybe because of what they went through when they were kids, and because he took care of her... he loved her. And sometimes the line between a brotherly/sisterly love and a sexual love becomes blurry...
