What was the real ending?

I just watched what appeared to be an abridged version of this TV movie. More than half the movie was about the time in Italy. The part of the movie that explored the relationship between the adult Rita and Vittorio was absent. They didn't mention Rita's adoption or show any of Rita and Vittorio's interaction as adults.
They did show Mario stalking Rita. The end of the movie was just the sound of a gun being shot. But it wasn't clear whether Mario killed Rita or himself. The reason I thought Mario might have shot himself is because he said he went to confession. If he was not going to kill himself why would he go to confession before he did the act?
I thought it was a very confusing ending. I was enjoying the movie but then resented having spent 2 hours watching it and not having a resolution at the ending. Part of the confusion could be because they seemed to merge parts 1 & 2 into one two hour movie.

hey. what you saw was the first part of the movie. they played the second part (the continuation) the next night. that is why you're confused. there's a lot more to the story that you missed. They made the 4 hour movie into two, 2 hour episodes. hope that helps.

I was wondering if it was a two-parter, because I had seen the first part twice and really like it, where Sophia Loren was a teacher in a small village in Italy and maintaining the true lineage of Vito a secret.

Watch the first part, ignore the second. What a waste of 2 hours!
