Rip-off show?

This new show, "Chuck," which NBC is starting in the fall, sure sounds a lot like Jake 2.0. Nerdy computer guy gets government secrets downloaded into his brain and becomes a new secret weapon! Gee, where have we heard that before. I won't be watching that. They should have picked up Jake three years ago instead.

you're talking about a show ripping off a show that's ripping off The 6 Million Dollar Man.

And they both suck anyway...

reply

Hmm, never thought about Jake being similar to the 6 million dollar man, but yeah, it is. I disagree with you though - I don't think Jake sucks, it was a good show.

It didn't really ripoff the six million dollar man. But they did acknowledge the influence from that show and that was an episode with Lee Majors. Chuck is a hokey piece of crap.

I agree with you guy on that but NBC will more than likely get a lot of people to watch it. I felt that Jake 2.0 should have lasted atleast 3 to possibly 5 seasons. Every week there was something new on the show. They even had Lee Majors who was The Six Million Dollar Man appear on the show as a special guest appearance. That one show Chuck is going to suck!

reply

I cannot believe that CHUCK has such a retarded name, and also that actor looks very similar to Jake! i mean god, at least get a character that looks a bit different NBC!!!!!

im not sure if i want to watch it....god. im so hearbroken over jake 2.0. it was a fantastic show, just on the wrong network and never was promoted enough.

reply

I agree with you totally about them not promoting Jake 2.0 enough when it was on UPN. Why in the world did NBC just not try to pick up Jake 2.0 up from UPN? The reason why I say that is that it happens all of the time when major stations pick up shows and air them on their station. That is what happened with JAG. It was on NBC and what did NBC do they dumped off onto CBS and CBS had a great show that lasted for several years and NBC could have kept the show for themselves you know.

chuck is much much better than jake 2.0 IMO

hell yeah CHUCK rocks. It is more about the nerdiness of the character not him being a "secret weapon".

reply

Yeah, CHUCK is way better than Jake 2.0, IMO. Zachary Levi is cuter (in a nerdy way) and Adam Baldwin is pretty hot even tho his character is a bit of a jackass.

Fundamentally, there are no unique shows (that make it), it's merely taking an idea and spinning it a bit.

The twist on The Six Million Dollar Man is making it relevant for this period in time. Back then, young males identified with the astronaut type who got the gals. Now, young males identify with the nerdy dude who struggles even talking with girls. So, it's them with super ability.

Same thing with Chuck (and yeah the guy looks like Jake). Guys want to believe that if they are only around good looking women long enough, these woman will be interested in their 'inner-self.' Really just a spin on all those Jerry Lewis films where he ends up with the bosomy blonde.

AGREE!

When I first saw Chuck I thought it was a rip off too!
Not as good either.
And yet its the one that lasts <_<

Six million dollar man- hmm....similar to Jake but nowhere near as close as Chuck is. Six million dollar man was a guy who is already a top man getting upgraded, not a geek.

At least I get to see the wonderful Christopher Gorham on Covert Affairs now.

Rose: How was that sentence going to end?
Tenth Doctor: Does it need saying?
Me: YES!!!!

Relevant to what -501 said above. Georges Polti(1867-1946), noted French scribbler and renowned foozehead, famously wrote a book titled 'The 36 Dramatic Situations', in which he listed all the dramatic situations. As the title suggests, there are 36. At 35 he had 'Nerdlinger gets nanobotted and turns into a supernerdlinger.'

They are showing Jake 2.0 on AXN Taiwan on Saturday mornings. It is a lot better than Chuck IMO. Chuck is garbage. Jake 2.0 is not great television but it is watchable and a lot more original.

reply

I like Chuck more than Jake 2.0. Both were fun.

"Guy is in an accident, gains superpowers" goes way back before Jake 2.0. It even goes way back before six million dollar man. Spider Man dates back to 1962. The Invisible Man dates back to 52. The original archetype of the "science altered a man and gave him secret powers" is probably Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the 1880s. The rest is all window dressing: what he does with the powers, where he works, with whom he interacts... blah blah.
