For Those Thinking Of Watching This Show

This one is just a bit of info for those who are wondering whether to watch this show or not.

Firstly, the show is actually two and a half seasons long, to which it was cancelled by Fox abruptly, then the 4th season which was a bit of a mess.

As far as the 9.0 rating goes, I think that's exaggerated. The show is too up and down for it to deserve such a high rating, it's not flawless from start to finish like some other series are.

To say it's just as good as Friends is pushing it, a lot. Though I would have rated it around an 8.2.

Also, another note is that the fourth season is very difficult to watch. If you loved the first 3 seasons, then you will push through it, but it's nothing like what it should have been.

Despite the 4th season occurring 7 years later, rather than taking advantage of that to move the story forward several years, the writers decide to proceed as if only two months had passed in the timeline. With Alia Shawkat going from 17 to 24, Portia De Rossi's very noticeable plastic surgery, (She's almost unrecognisable) David Cross' weight gain, Michael Cera shooting up in height and looking much older, and Bateman's few extra wrinkles, despite Jeffrey Tambor, Will Arnett, Jessica Walter and especially Tony Hale appearing ageless, the appearance changes were too significant to attempt to ignore them.

It doesn't really make sense. Not only was that a factor, conflicting schedules were also a factor, which means despite the full family being shown on the intro, characters such as Lindsay, played by Portia De Rossi, aren't even seen until the third episode. Will Arnett is seen briefly throughout the series, I don't recall one moment when every one is in the same room. (In fact I'm pretty sure that never happens throughout the 4th season)

The zany interactions between the characters is gone, the focus is instead placed upon 2-3 characters to carry the story, and the other gaps filled with guest appearances. It's very difficult to watch, and a shame.

There have been rumours, and repeated confirmations that a 5th season will be happening, but it keeps getting delayed and delayed. I would like to see the story done right, with all of the characters involved at once, but as we've seen with other shows that tried to be renewed, the actors and actresses move on to bigger and better things and it's near enough impossible to get everyone on set again. So you either don't do it or we get what we had in the 4th season, rotating of characters who rarely if ever interact, only in mention, some of that interaction which actually happened via a blue screen. (I know, right?)

I'm torn on season 4. Should they have just left it the way it was? Or were they right to try to do it anyway, despite having their hands tied with schedules and trying to persist with a story which was written 7 years ago? I'm not sure. I just know it's very hard to watch and a shame they couldn't recreate what made the show great from seasons 1-3.

But in my opinion, definitely worth a watch if you like comedies!

Hmm...I have seen a lot of what is considered the best tv (friends, Seinfeld, the office, etc) but I have to say that IMO this exceeds them all. If you haven't already I would recommend rewatching because for me after my first watch through all four seasons, the show was just an average funny show...nothing special. But my gosh after watching it a second time there are so many jokes that you miss the first time through whether because it's foreshadowing something or just flew over my head. Now I consider this to be the greatest comedy show ever made. However I completely understand if you prefer other shows. Many find this show funny but for some it just is perfect.

Have you seen Always Sunny?

I was basically told to watch this because of Sunny. People have said it's one of the closest shows to IASIP.

I think Always Sunny is better than Arrested Development, but AD might be better than those other shows you mentioned, especially Friends.

I think this is the smartest written comedy ever and so "re-watchable." I personally find Friends to be terribly overrated- I've never got the hype. I'm not big on the popular comedies though (friends, modern family, Big Bang..."

I prefer AD and Always Sunny over anything else.

^ This...it's actually quite possibly the smartest written show ever in any genre...and so goshdang rewatchable

Agreed. The Bluths rock!

As for Friends, I loved it in the 90s but have no desire to watch it again.

Disagree. Most of that 9.0 rating comes from when the show was only on for 3 seasons, or 2.5 as you refer to it. It was very well written and had a huge following, even after it was cancelled.

Also, another note is that the fourth season is very difficult to watch.
Completely agree, and I think it hurts the show overall. The characters all change far too much, and not just physically.

Supposedly they could not get all of the actors back together to film the show again, so the had to use the individual storylines. Those are rather weak though, when you compare them to how much the family interacted in the previous seasons.

For those thinking of watching this show, ignore this shìt. Just got through your first viewing, huh?

Just finished watching all 4 seasons. The first 3 were great, season 4 sucked. All of the characters are old AF and they don't click like they did in the first 3 seasons. I think anyone defending season 4 is a super fan and can't look at it for what it is, a waste of time. As far As donkey saying this is "The smartest written show ever in any genre" i would say it is good but not THAT good.

The first 3 seasons are fantastic. Season 4 was a mess. It had great moments but it didn't have the tightness and flow was in shambles due to the episodes being longer. Plus the family is barely together and they focus WAY too much on celebrity cameos.

My observations:
* The two youngster Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat aged alot (no surprise)
* I agree on the agelessness of Jeffrey Tambor, Will Arnett and Tony Hale
* Also Henry Winkler (Zuckerkorn) didn't age.
* David Cross got somewhat chubby but nowhere was still looking the same age.
* Bateman added some wrinkles but still okay
* Portia De Rossi struggled but nowhere near unrecognizable
* Jessica Walter actually looks way older than in season 3.
* For me a surprise was Lisa Minelli who is the only female cast that looked unchanged.

Season 4 is set 6 years after Season 3. It's understandable that the writers did not want to change the characters and settings too much in order to please the fanbase.
