Beautiful film - Modi's eccentricity?

This was a beautiful film, very heartbreaking and romantic. Was Modigliani really quite eccentric as Andy Garcia portrayed him to be? Modi loved Jeanne, but he wasn't particularly affectionate towards her in the film, was he? I'd appreciate some comments. =D
