Excellent film

I had read about this film in a motion picture trade magazine a while back. I just rented it last night and was blown away from how this movie was made. It was excellent. Andy's performance was so life-like and the whole movie was an eye opener. Every now and then a great movie such as Modigliani comes around. I which they could make more great movies like this one.

I agree, I wish films like these would get the recognition they deserve. Instead they are just brushed under the radar as not to attract to much attention. I waited two years for this movie to be released and then didn't even get to see it on the big screen, thank goodness for internet because when it was released on video, the only way to see it was to purchase it on line, it was even sent to my local video store until recently, it was like I went to rent it and they were like who? Excellent movie, but the next one to watch for is The Lost City and I have a feeling the same thing is going to happen to this one, but I'm sure its going to be great.

I have to keep that one in mind. I find out about these films through magazines called In-Camera and Arri and FujiFilm puts out one called Exposure. When I read about one of these great films and the release date, Hollywood video and Blockbuster never even heard of them or don't carry them. What a shame some of these films will never be seen by the general public in America.
Some times I run across a film like "wooden camera" by mistake.

I just saw Modigliani a week ago. I hadn't even heard of the film, although I know who Modigliani was.

This movie is simply outstanding. A disgrace that Hollywood ignored it. But, then again, would the American masses be that interested in a story about an early 20th Century Jewish-Italian who was painting and struggling in Paris?

Anyway, if you don't see this film, you are sorely missing out on one of the most touching films ever. The cinematography and direction is mindblowing.
Acting is incredible. Andy Garcia is a vastly underrated actor. See it!

Outstanding is right, Andy Garcia is always wonderful, but he is fantastic in this role, so is the Iranian who plays Picasso.
I guess I slept through Art History class in prep school, not sure she covered Modigliani anyway, but does anyone know why he painted everyone with such elongated necks, I do and don't find it attractive, not really sure. Well I suppose it was just his style.
The little girl he was painting looked exactly like the girl from Little Miss Sunshine, but she is uncredited so who knows.
The Lost City is an excellent movie as well. A must see esp. if you're an Andy Garcia fan or interested in the history of Cuba.

its a good one but I felt it could have been much better

Sorry, it doesn't fly. Hollywood is able to create something more or less appropriate onto its "own territory" only. This movie looks like a long desperate effort to wind up the dead engine - with much noise and fuss, all in vain.

Awful movie because Andy Garcia looks nothing like Modigliani and Jeezus, the guy does all this research for the part and still couldn't pronounce his name right.

I thought it was a good movie but not one I would ever buy. Plus, it was dreadfully depressing.

That soundtrack, however, was AMAZING!

this movie only got a 4% rating on rottentomatoes.com

I think Modigliani is an excellent film. I hope there will be more movie like this one. I am getting tired of those Hollywood blockbusters. I don't care about those ratings anymore. If you like the story of the movie, go and see it and judge by yourself and do not let those ratings decide for you. I have seen many good movies with very bad reviews and those films who won Oscars are not actaully that good.

reply

i believe i agree with you man, some of those movies are not woth those ratings, but lets face it , they are voted by the users and them only, what happens is that americans watch only hollywood made moviesand they donĀ“t see beyond their point of view, anyways, themovie was great and very touching story about a man who suffered in his life, but gained fame once he was dead.

cheers

Well ,actually That is a good film. Some people complain about the real story's being distorted or sth like that!! But for me it was a starting gun for reading and studying about the painters and go to different exhibitions and when I read about modigliani I found the movie so graceful in expressing his passions and his caracter...

Haven't been a fan of Andy Garcia -- seemed like a one dimensional backup for Al Pacino who I always found over rated. Never cared for Modigliani paintings, just skipped over them in Art History as uninteresting sketches by someone with no drafting talent -- BUT this film was brilliant and a breakthrough for me to appreciation of both men. Garcia is now in my list of actors to watch; Modi's impressionistic style opens up the art world as much as Picasso's or more. Now I have to study films by this writer-director - must go back to the credits and learn his name. Thank you nima-ghasemi for expressing my own thoughts very closely.

loved the interaction between Modi & Picasso(although he didn't look a bit like the real Pablo..),Elsa was as charming & strong as in "Mina Tannenbaum",got to see some more of her, that smile...

Maybe it didn't show the real Modigliani or the exact occurrences, but this is always hard w period pieces. It did evoke the times, his interactions w other artists, the tough life of an artist in Paris(made Moulin Rouge look like dogsh!t...!). The Piaf song, whores & such were a bit much at times, but did augment the overall atmosphere, the little boy being his 'inner child'or innocent version was interesting but not really explained, maybe it didn't need it.
Very European movie, except tacky (triphop?)song during creation of the paintings!!! yuck, indeed, almost ruined the film for me.

Andy Garcia was amazing, not too cocky, not too emotional, just right.

OP: Very true. I was surprised at how good it is. More people should have seen it. It goes to show there's more to movies than the A-List. If only the masses were more open-minded we would have more stars and more quality films.

After all... tomorrow is another day.
