I would love it if they made more!

"Dancehall of the Dead" was supposed to be the next one made, but the funding for PBS was cut. I don't think there are plans for more any time soon.

I wonder if it would have stuck to the novel and just had Leaphorn--or would they have figured out a way to include Chee?

I really enjoyed these, too. Their appearance on PBS was a welcome surprise.

One of the things that I loved about this show was that unlike other cop shows the main characters were Native American and not white.

I loved this series and was glad when I could get all three stories on DVD. I have gone back and re-viewed them time and time again. I just love them. I wish other Tony Hillerman stories would be made into film.
I understand that some Native Americans are not pleased with the finished products and thought that more care should have been given to such things as making sure that the Navajo language was properly pronounced, or that more Navajo actors were used. I can understand these criticisms.
In defense of the those finished products, I can say that the actors who were used did a wonderful job. The production values were high. The plots, even if not following Tony Hillerman's story to the letter, were still very entertaining. And of course, Mr. Hillerman participated in the projects.
I feel that the shows served a very important purpose. They gave non-Native Americans a glimpse of present-day life on a reservation. (Most Americans don't even know that there still are reservations.) They also showed some of the spiritual practices of the Navajos and how these ancient beliefs are still held even in the 21st century.
Watching the programs has caused me to do more research on Native American culture and history.
When Hollywood or the TV industry gets its hands on a story and translates that story onto film, many liberties are taken. Scriptwriters revise historical events or even Biblical stories to suit their needs.
With this in mind, I think that the three Hillerman stories were successes, and certainly were very entertaining.
