Awful, just awful.

This has got to be the worst adaptation of a book I’ve ever seen. The acting is terrible, probably due to the equally terrible directing as many times actors are only as good as their direction. The departures from the book are both unnecessary and mystifying. Awful, just awful. I realize that 2 hours is not enough to do justice to a book, but the screenplay here sucks.

Hmm...seems that the book fans are disappointed with this adaptation...on the other hand, Tony Hillerman was very closely involved with the production, and the screenwriters ran everything by him. He actually says in an interview that he thought the changes were actually better for the story--he said with his usual good humor that there were lots of times he thought, 'Wish I'd thought of that!'

As a fan of Chris Eyre (director) and many of the cast members, I really enjoyed this, and I didn't think the acting or direction was terrible at all. But I do understand how adaptations can be disappointing...I'm usually not happy with the ones of books that I love most. Yet, I think it's important to always consider that there are tons of things in books that just don't translate to film either visually or technically (or economically). I tend to think that as long as the original writer has their stamp of approval on an adaptation, it's just proof that all stories are really more organic than we might think.

I really agree. But I wouldn't blame the actors of native american descent. Hillerman's work requires Hollywood treatment..not PBS Redford.

can anyone tell me how i might be able to get to chee- leaphorn films, be mindful of the fact that i do live in england and a region 1 isnt really an option for me. thanks

Let me preface my remarks by saying that I am not an expert on things electronic!!
I checked the amazon.co.uk site for Skinwalkers, the first of the Chee-Leaphorn movies on PBS. It said that indeed it is a Region 1 DVD, but it seemed to indicate that if you had a multi-region DVD player and an NTSC-compatible TV, it would work.

Hollywood screwed it up. Look up The Dark Wind.

I haven't read the book, but I kept fast forwarding it on my DVD player. It was kind of boring.
