Hmm...seems that the book fans are disappointed with this adaptation...on the other hand, Tony Hillerman was very closely involved with the production, and the screenwriters ran everything by him. He actually says in an interview that he thought the changes were actually better for the story--he said with his usual good humor that there were lots of times he thought, 'Wish I'd thought of that!'
As a fan of Chris Eyre (director) and many of the cast members, I really enjoyed this, and I didn't think the acting or direction was terrible at all. But I do understand how adaptations can be disappointing...I'm usually not happy with the ones of books that I love most. Yet, I think it's important to always consider that there are tons of things in books that just don't translate to film either visually or technically (or economically). I tend to think that as long as the original writer has their stamp of approval on an adaptation, it's just proof that all stories are really more organic than we might think.
