This is a much more personal and engaging film. Arguably, Ashutosh's best film. It didn't do well at the Box office despite SRK's presence and was killed by critics for being too slow and preachy and what not. But I would say it seems to have been made by Ashutosh for more than just money. A brave move to make such a movie especially after Lagaan.
I would say Swades > Lagaan >>> 3 Idiots.
TBH, I think Swades is neither under-rated nor overrated. It is perfectly rated 8.5 by IMDb users. It is easily one of the best Indian films ever made, and is far better than 3 Idiots and Lagaan. A few of Aamir's are overrated on IMDb, for instance, 3 Idiots, Rang De Basanti and Taare Zameen Par. They deserve less than 8.5 but certainly more than 8.0.

I love 3 Idiots and Lagaan as much as I love Swades, but yes Swades is better. Simply because 3 Idiots and Lagaan are very commercial (too much synchronised singing and dancing) whereas Swades has that art-filmy vibe and is much more realistic.

No matter what you do, you just can not take pretentiousness out of a Bollywood movie.
Not saying Lagaan is a bad film, it is in fact among my favourites, but saying that Swades was pretentious and Lagaan wasn't is just taking things a bit too far.
3 Idiots was on a whole new level of pretentiousness. Accept it or not. If you can't see it in 3 Idiots and you see it in Swades, that's simply because you were looking for it in the latter.

If Lagaan was a "fable" then so was Swades. It was a fictional tale and was totally not trying to be realistic. It just had a very rooted message. And "glossy picture" of Indian villages ? What are you on about mate ? A farmer family dying of hunger is glossy for you ? A kid selling water for 25paise is glossy ?
I would suggest you check your definitions of "glossy" and "pretentious"

I'm not Indian and haven't seen that many Indian movies but although I liked Swades I think Lagaan is better. Haven't seen 3 idiots.
