Viewed the DVD tonight and loved it. The boy was fantastic.
One question, how did all his Jewish neighbors, his mother, and his step-mother all survive. I assume they all spent the war years in Budapest. Was Budapest ever totally occupied by the Nazis?
Budapest was a weird exception to the Holocaust. The Germans occupied Hungary in 1944 and divided the country into six zones for deporting Jews. They completely swept the first five zones, sending 400,000 Jews to Auschwitz, but Budapest was the final zone and because of the advance of the Red Army, some intervention by Raoul Wallenberg, and the challenges of operating in a big city, the Germans didn't put the same deportation machine into play. Lots of Jews were killed in Budapest in wild massacres or sent on foot to Austria, perhaps half, but it was possible for Jews to survive there unlike almost everywhere else in eastern Europe because it took place so late in the war.
And so Budapest was the only city in Central Europe where a small but significant Jewish community stayed after the war.

How do I educate my self on Holocaust when there is no fair debate. I dont accept the fact that I only need to listen to the "official" allies story of Holocaust. I wish to hear the other side of debate and I will make my own conclusion. Killing germans is bad, allies bombed germany and killed women and children, it is even shown in this movie how jews are happy that the germany is in ruins.

i don't take sides in this argument, but feel i should make a comparison. 2 police men pick up a man that's about to testify as a witness that they were involved in drug deals. they take him out into the woods and kill him, then cover it up. the only 2 people alive that know what happened to the informant aren't going to tell. that's happened. that's how i feel about history. you don't know, unless you were there. if you want, you can tell the story any way you want. look at the Iraq War. look at religion. i know only what i've seen to be true. the rest is whatever...

What an idiot you are nedimhaken. I have nothing to add to the original question except that Horthy to some degree tried to resist the Nazi and the Arrow's calls to deport the Jews. I read his autobiography, supposedly, he thought Jews were just sent to work camps. It was not until he read the Vrba report, that he found out they were exterminated, so he claims. However it took him a full month to stop the deportations (only after significant international pressure)so I don't think it was done in good faith. He was more concerned about land than people.
