Why are so many confused?

Ok. So this wasn't the greatest movie I've ever seen, but it makes you think and pick out some subtle hints and innuendoes along the way.

A lot of people on the boards seem to think the ending in the lab was a hallucination. I don't think so. On one of the children's charts it said, 'anthropometrique'(sp?). That is studying measurements of the human body. For research? Many have said that they thought the lab was a Nazi lab,so why not? They wanted a perfect race so maybe they were trying to research what they needed to get that perfect race. Or maybe they had abnormalities (physical or mental...there were wheelchairs, padded rooms and different kinds of restraints) and were trying to figure out why and drowned them because they were different.

It can be assumed from the dialogue that Anna is pregnant from rape. So, yeah, from her actions it certainly doesn't seem that she wanted the baby. But her bindings were off when she woke up after finding the box in the wall with the marbles and profile of the little boy. She was also covered up and seemed surprised by this. maybe the ghost children didn't want her harming the baby - because they themselves had been harmed- by binding her abdomen and unwound them and covered her up after she fell asleep. They certainly didn't seem to want to harm her at the end of the film. They helped her lay down gently in the basement/lab and deliver her stillborn baby. How did she end up back upstairs? Don't know. She did tell Judith to bring help when she crawled in the chute and closed the door. Judith was off her meds and apparently not thinking clearly, so maybe she got her back up there.

Also, why do people think that Anna killed the kittens? I thought the other worker said that she should have known because Judith was off her meds, meaning that Judith drowned them.

A lot of unanswered questions, but I don't think the movie deserves ALL the flack it's getting. Some, yes.

Ok people, feel free to blast me. I'm a big girl and can take it.

I agree for the most part...Very interesting take on a very interesting movie, if you allow it to be. I actually liked this film. No, it was not without flaws but if anyone has seen Laugier's most recent film "Martyrs" they would see that he has grown as a filmmaker...Just my 2 cents.By the way, as most already know, this guy is going to helm the new "Hellraiser"...So if Clive Barker believes in him...

i totally agree with both of you. Flaws? Yes...Lacks? maybe...i decided to watched cauz' i recently saw Martyrs, Laugier latest film that was very good...

you could there's an aestetic here, after two films there are recurring themes: experints on human bodies, obsession with religion etc...

by the way this is a first feature film with all the problems that maybe sometimes occurs in a young director's career. But for a first opus it's a pretty damn' good one.

Somehing i couldn't tell of most mainstream horror flicks nowadays.

Anna absolutely did kill the kittens. She did that so that Judith would turn against the other woman and rely on Anna. Anna manipulated Judith so that she could use Judith to discover the secrets of the place, etc. While Judith was so close to the other woman, taking her meds, and somewhat mistrusting of Anna - Anna could not use her for her own purposes, so that is why she killed the kittens. Also, Judith only stopped taking her meds after she found the dead kittens and Anna had won her over to her side and persuaded her to stop taking them.

Anna was a VERY disturbed individual. In some ways, worse than Judith. However, the ghosts of the children were certainly real and not a figment of her imagination. Also you are right - the underground dorm was real as well. And the caretakers did kill the 'worst' children: those with disfigurements, mental disorders, and disabilities.

If you’re asking how her body ended up back upstairs. It didn't. If you look at the surroundings she is in the same place on the floor, it's just that instead of being sterile the place looks dilapidated. You can tell it's the same place because the same medical cabinet is at the end of the hall opposite the elevator. It's just that the director woman knew a different means for accessing the underground facility. Notice they came down the long hallways with the large pipes on them. The same long hallways Anna was looking down before she found the children in the tubs of water.
