got it figured out

Ok here goes.

Nothing evil was done to the children at saint ange during the war. The staff are kind people who did their best to save as many children as they could, but there were too many and limited resources, so some of the children died.

Anna arrives to begin working at st ange. She does not want to become a mother and is trying to kill her unborn child. It's hard to blame her. It can't have been easy to find safe abortions in 1958 france.

But anna is also insane, prone to hallucinations and paranoia. She also has a nice rack but that's beside the point.

So she invents a conspiracy involving ghost children, and evil nuns who helped the nazis conduct medical experiments on orphans during the war, and sets herself up as the savior of these children to compensate for her feelings of guilt about killing her fetus, and general reluctance to become a mother.

She enlists the equally insane Marie (name?) in her imaginary crusade, gets her to stop taking the medication she needs, and convinces her that something horrible was done to the children long ago.

btw the episode with Marie and the kittens is a version in miniature of what's happening with Anna and her child. She doesn't want to take care of the kittens so she drowns them, forgets she did it and blames the staff.

Later anna and marie go sneaking around, bust the mirrors in the bathroom and break tino a wing of the orphanage that was shut up because of the bad memories, and BECAUSE THE BOARDS ARE ROTTING AND IT'S UNSAFE.

Anna crawls into what appears to be a coal shute (???) and here's where the hallucination begins. She imagines it to be an elevator that takes her into a secret underground laboratory where zombie/ doctor children who jump up out of womb-like vats of slimy water and resemble fetuses, surround her chanting "mother, mother" and force her to give birth against her wishes.

This part of the movie is a 20-minute hallucination in which Anna succumbs to her feelings of guilt and reluctance to become a mother.

What actually happened is this: She stepped into the coal shute, stepped out into the same room after a few minutes, stumbled around in the dark, pushed out a stillbirth on the floor and died as a result of the physical abuse she has been inflicting on herself for the past month.

The cook and the head nun or whatever find her later and decide to call the police. notice they are not nervous at all, as they should be if they really were concealing horrible secrets in a subterannean dungeon. that was all in Anna and Marie's mind.

Marie is off her meds, so she has a hallucination on the way out of the hospital. She sees what she wants to see, anna has become the mother that her childhood friends never had.

pretty ok movie really. with some hot ladies too : )

yep, that's the same conclusion I came to....it just makes sense to me, unlike some of the other whacked-out conclusions I've seen posted to the board!

pretty good assesment I think and the most logical. Although I'm not so sure the final scene was an hallucination. I do believe the place was indeed haunted because the boy died from a fall after seeing 'something' behind the mirror. The little girl that was with him was obviously scared to go to bathroom alone becuase of the 'scary kids'.

This movie gets trashed and its definitely ambiguous in its narrative. But its beautifully filmed and offers some good discussion and allows for you to use your imagination more than most films these days. Sometimes having everything spelled out for the audience doesnt always make for a better film IMO. Thats not to say this film doesnt have its share of problems though...Great creepy atmosphere however.....

Great explanation lbodownload! I never understood it before your post, lol.

at the nice rack comment.

One plus two plus two plus one.

(replying to a really old comment, I know)

I don't think the first boy saw anything... he was just scared by the lightning and flipped backwards, that's all.

Otherwise, this seems like as good an explanation as any to the whole movie. Kind of what I figured too, especially when the "secret ward" all in white, etc. etc. came into the movie. I mean, that's obviously not a real place... the elevator/dumb-waiter ride alone seems like it would have placed her in the middle of the Earth for as long as it took, so yeah, it was just in her head.

good one... helped me get it too

By Marie you mean Judith?

reply

Hi!
I agree with this explanation! I think its great. Although, I do also agree with the post that the house is definately haunted. But I just had a thought........

Maybe the blonde girl in the beginning is the seed of 'story'. Maybe she made up the idea of the 'scary children'. The young boy in the beginning does not know about them and becomes scared at the thought of them, and then due to him being scared he thinks he sees children and accidently falls and dies.

Judith also only believes in the scary children and starts hallucinating about them because the little blonde girl used to talk about them all the time.

In turn, once again, Anna only finds out about the scary children and starts to hallucinate about them because the little blonde girl whispers in her ear about them.

She is the seed, and everyone from then on is impressionable by her story.

Thanks lbodownload for explaining this movie. It was still boring.

I think Judith is a nut case and she killed all the children and played "doctor" to Anna. Thats why she needed the meds and thats why the cook lady knew that Judith had to be the one who killed the kittens, because she had done it before

Courage is not the absence of fear. It is acting in spite of it.

Everything makes sense, except how is she torturing herself?

reply

I think I agree with most.

But I would like to add that the pregnancy is most likely due to rape, which isn't said explicitly, but it is suggested.
