Is this film really that bad?

Well I suppose I should watch it for myself, but really....is it that bad?

I loved Martyrs (maybe loved is the wrong word :-)), and clearly Pascal Laugier is a good director. I'm not expecting anything like Martyrs mind you, just want an effective slow burner.

It's absolutely not bad. It's just french cinema and the photography itself deserves a view. You do well to not exepct anything like "Martyrs", even if it has the same director though, cause "Saint Ange" is a little masterpiece of sounds, images and whispers.

Thanks for the comments. That's what I suspected, and cna tell from what you say it will now be well worth a watch....tonight it is then!

To be honest with you, I don't know what makes a movie like this a "bad movie". Scary, it's scary. Plot, it has it. Characters, ok, perhaps there are a few stereotypes. Still, this movie is super enyojable if you watch it properly knowing that it's not anything like "Saw" or "The Grudge". It's a old magion abandoned into the woods, and a young girl has to face its secrets all by herself. In the process of doing so, photography and imaging are pretty superb.

I thought it was very good indeed....and found it to be highly original too.
The way the narrative changes direction is excellent, and not too dissimilar in that respect to Martyrs.

thanks, Roveston, for the heads up.

I'm glad some other people like this film; I found it haunting and atmospheric, but had started to worry about my judgement looking at the general reaction on this board.
I think the film did go astray a couple of times - it certainly drifted in the middle and lost some of the tension, and I'd rather not have seen the "scarey children" because they were a lot less "scarey" when we actually got to see them.

It's a really good film, and I agree with the above poster that you can find lots of Martyrs connections (though I won't say what sort, due to spoilers). Also a brave and thought-provoking ending, and lots of thematic depth. Can't wait for Laugier's next film! The IMDB rating is bogus, probably due to impatient viewers who were expecting something else.

I loved it :-)

This is a movie for those who appreciate story and subtlety, not for those who can only understand the smack of a blunt instrument.

I really liked this film. I don't think it is getting credit where deserved. This is a somber psychological film and I think you have to be willing to think about it some and let the characters into you own headspace to get it.

I'm not sure why it gets such terrible reviews, it's one of the better films I have seen in a while. Plenty to think about.

I don't think it was bad at all! We are not given everything on a platter to understand, you have to listen and pay attention and figure things out for yourself. It seemed slow in some parts but they are building an atmosphere. I don't know why so many people here hated it so much.

Yeah, I didn't think it was bad. It kind of has a "Turn of the Screw" thing going on. At worst, you could call it an interesting failure, but I don't know that it's really even a "failure".

Well, considering that even 10 year old can pass as 40 year old "reviewer", you should never judge movie by reviews here.

Considering that first bad 1 star review I read about this was some guy saying that this is actually a good movie, but everything about it is bad (it takes a genius to contradict yourself in same sentence) then offering us his recommendation to watch some "good horror" and mentions Alexandra Aje as one, praising him as talented director, it should be clear what type of audiences watched this movie.

Yeah, a talented guy who never directed anything original and made his career doing remakes, and one slightly "original" movie is in fact ripoff of few dozen other much better movies and same guy who thinks that enough blood splatters makes a great movie.

it's hard for me to take that "review" seriously.

Yeah, this movie had several problems, script could have been a much better, but badly made it certainly wasn't.
