What do you think is the saddest song in the world?

It's a weird idea for a movie, a beer company holding a contest to find the saddest song in the world, but it made me think about what really is the saddest song. I suppose I would have to say "Gloomy Sunday", as song by Billie Holiday, even though it has an upbeat ending (it was only a bad dream). Then there are all those old "sick" rock songs about boy friends or girl friends wipping out in car, motorcycle or plane crashes, shot by a disapproving parent, ODing on a controled substence or found floating face down in that dirty old river. I'm sure you've got some ideas.
Just remember: I was as good as any and better then most-Vincent Freeman in Gattaca

You and I must be soulmates(that is if they actually exist) because even before I read your post, Gloomy Sunday is the song that went through my mind. Scary.

Gloomy Sunday is also my choice. The "dream" verse was added to make it more palatable. The other lyrics are a loose translation of the version that was popular in Hungary; the original lyrics were rejected by all publishers on the grounds that it just wouldn't be healthy for anyone to hear something so very, very, depressing. You can check the various versions here: http://www.phespirit.info/gloomysunday/

THIS, to me, is the saddest song I've ever heard. Although there aren't any words to it, there needn't be any; the music speaks for itself. The description is not quite as specific as I'd hoped, so I'm just going to post a video with the song in it. I DO know that it is a string quartet in b-flat by Ludwig van Beethoven.

I dare you to listen and NOT cry.

Funny...Gloomy Sunday was the song that popped into my head when I saw the title of the post. Haven't seen this movie yet. I bought it at a pawn shop...they have used movies 6/$20 and it looks interesting. :)

My first reaction was moonlight sonata, by ludwig von

It's become cliche, but the pure emotional sadness cannot be denied

In my opinion "The Living Years" by Mike and The Mechanics. Listened it in the last days before my dad passed away, and each time I listen I cry, not only for the meaning of the music itself but for what it means to me.

For an art flick I thought it was worse than a near beer hangover. Wretched!

For me, the saddest song would have to be "Mad World" by Gary Jules. That tune always brings a tear to my eye.

Llorando by Rebekah Del Rio from Mulholland Dr.

Some great sad songs here — and don't they say so much?

My choice: "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues" by Danny O'Keefe.
