Mormon Cinema???

I heard this is just a Mormon (LDS) film. Anybody else heard the same?

reply

Yeah, I heard this too. On the "official website" it says "A Utah Comedy"... but if it's Mormon, wouldn't they just say that? Maybe they're embarassed or something.

reply

I was kind of confused about that too. I auditioned for the film when they cast down in LA and I downloaded the script and read it and it didn't seem "Mormon." It was set in Utah, but there was nothing wierd about it. I don't know very much about Mormons though. It was a good script at least.

reply

Maybe they mean "Utah" as in the culture and not necessarily Mormon. Its a pretty unique culture, I lived there for a long time.

But what exactly does that mean? Does Mr. Darcy want Lizzie *and* Jane? I hope it's not full of negative stereotypes. I'm not Mormon (I'm a non-denominational Christian) nor am I from Utah, so I'm pretty clueless here.

reply

I highly doubt that. Considering that the makers are almost all Mormons, I doubt that the movie will have anything that is a negative stereotype, what purpose would that serve? I'm pretty sure its based on Utah culture vs. a Mormon "religious" movie. I don't even know how to explain Utah culture... Guess we'll have to wait and see.

hi all!!1 well my brother is the producer and one of the writers.... to answer a few of the questions:

he and the writers loved the book... and are staying very true to it..as far s the script goes, lovers of the book will love it.. how the acting and editing turn it out,... well I have faith in my bro!

yes, it will have a mormon background, but not overwhelmingly so, my brother was very concerned about this matter and has assured me that this the mormon back drop is to give context.. and not an main theme. what better modern adaptation than a religion that encourages marriage early and emphasisez somewhat archaic methods for dating and courting???? He assured me that this movie would be enjoyed by non-mormons and mormons alike.

as for release, he thinks it will only get release in utah and california to start, the rest depends on how well it is recieved. He is also entering it in a variety of film festivels so you may also see it there.

Later,
El.

I read the script and it is set mainly in Utah and features a lot of Mormon characters. I think it will be pretty accessible. I'm not a Mormon, though some of my family are, and I found it enjoyable. There are a couple of references that only people who know the culture well will get but mostly it is just in the background. Collins and Mary are the most Mormon of all the characters. The setting helps a lot in making Austen's story work.
