DID ANYONE NOTICE?

Having watched this film, took it for what it was and therefore kind of enjoyed the experience. It was a somewhat dumbed down version of the way Miss Austen would wish her masterpice interpreted but poetic licence and a chill pill weren't really de rigeur back in Miss Austen's days. Anyway that said - the reason why I stuck with it at the outset was the lead character's attire in the opening scene. A SCOTLAND FOOTIE STRIP, a rather dated one albeit but being Scottish thought it was worth watching the remainder to find out if there would be any further Scottish connection. Alas not, other than noting the Director's nationality. Scots wae hae!

Yes, I believe the shirt belonged to Scottish director, Andrew Black. As for further Scottish connections... the Las Vegas finale features the "Wee Chapel on the Strip" and a kilted preacher are a nod to Lydia and Wickham's rumored elopment to Scotland in Austen's novel.

Except that Lydia and George Wickham were married in London, at Darcy's insistence, and through Darcy's bribery of Wickham. At first the family thought the runaway couple intended to be married over the anvil in Scotland, because Lydia had mentioned marriage in her letter. However, in Jane's second letter, she tells Elizabeth that the couple did not go north, so they could never have intended to marry, since at that time in England, a girl of Lydia's age was considered too young to be married without her father, her brother or her guardian's approval.

I hope the screenwriter and director were familiar enough with Miss Austen's work, upon which they based their film, not to insert in theirs any allusions to erroneous details in the plot of the original.

You might want to check out the commentary to the film, as well as the Easter Eggs on the DVD. The filmmakers were very familiar with Austen's novel.

Every adaptation makes some changes to the original story, and this adaptation also has to deal with certain twists and turns because it is set in the 21st century instead of the 18th or 19th.

Other than that, I found this adaptation to be delightful and I watch it periodically.
