Music does not suit the movie.

The movie was good but the music didn't fit.
It would have been so much better without the goofy jazz soundtrack.

reply

I did not like the music.
The movie was great but the soundtrack was just like, plain old goofy coffeehouse jazz music. It didn't fit the mood of the visuals, at least to me it didn't.

reply

why does everyone say that? the music was great

Jareth: It's only forever, not long at all.

reply

I've never heard music like it before but I thought the music in Mirrormask suited it perfectly.

reply

it's just cheesy jazz music.

reply

No, its very good Jazz music and suits the films quirky style perfectly.
Just what sort of music would you use?

reply

It's a quirky, trippy sort of jazz that I felt complimented the film rather nicely.

In the very start of the movie, I wondered very much about the music. But in the ongoing movie, I thought the music suited it perfectly. I really enjoyed it, and am really in awe for the filmmakers that they had the guts to use that music!

You obviously know nothing about jazz or have terrible taste.

The music seemed more like trip hop or trance, and it seemed a bit "off," but that was in keeping with the rather twisted look of this film.

reply

I respectfully disagree. The klezmer/Gypsy/circus/vaudeville-esque blend of the soundtrack suited the feel and atmosphere of the movie perfectly IMO. What would you have preferred?

The crappy new age-ey music made me want to hurl. An orchestral score would have served the film much better, IMO.

reply

Are you people kidding me? The style of this film, costumes, make-up, mask, etc. with all that, there is NO way the film would have looked right with any other music. The jazzy, circus-y music fit PERFECTLY with it. And to the person before who said an orchestral score would have served the film better. Are you serious? This film is WAY too quirky, different and original for a "conventional orchestral" score. There is NO way in hell it could work out. If the score was anything different, THEN it wouldn't have fit with the film. And the score is just so damn COOL and almost sexy-ish, how could anyone dislike it?

reply

They could have gone with something electronic. Or even shoegazery style (like My Bloody Valentine). But that cheesy Kenny G style '80s sax music...blech. How about some real jazz? Oh, but I forgot: McKean was friends with that dude so he gave him the job. Not a shocker: that's usually how unqualified people get in positions they shouldn't be.

I got the feeling that whomever did the score had been instructed to watch Labyrinth 10 times back-to-back. It was goofy and distracting, and several parts sounded very much like the 80's tones in Labyrinth's score.

A dark, slow score driven by deep cellos would have suited it much better.

Good call. Or even Camper van Beethovenesque "circus music on acid". Just not that cheesy '80s saxophone.

I liked the jazzy music. It reminds me of the music that has been used in some of the old 1960s films. Including a German-made Sherlock Holmes film which was also criticised for using a similar type of jazz soundtrack. This style of music as background accompaniment always seems to work for me.
