i like you quote. i have streatches of lucent dreams that seem just as real as when i am awake. i smoke alot of weed so it keeps me in line and sane.

Highly recommended: Final Fantasy--The Spirits Within; Jumanji; What Dreams May Come; Waking Life; Delicatessan (same director as City of Lost Children). Tim Burton's Corpse Bride and Nightmare Before Christmas; also Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Terry Gilliam's Brazil, Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and Time Bandits, as well as his Monty Python's Life of Brian, etc.
Not into Star Wars and Trek, but love Bladerunner, Solaris (the original Russian version) and Lathe of Heaven (several versions).
This should keep you out of the sun this summer!

For weird and wonderful, check out Being John Malkovich, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

For straight fantasy, watch Peter Pan (the one with Jason Isaacs) and Willow.

Avoid Brazil.

reply

Why avoid Brazil? It's a brilliant film!

"I want my Liberace record back. It's mine!"

reply

I concur. Brazil is excellent. But avoid the "Love conquers all" version, the ending is edited and completely changed to the opposite of Gilliam intended.

I would like to see return to oz without having to buy a copy. Any suggestions?

rent it?

I have no idea what I meant when I wrote that. I've had horrible insomnia lately. Maybe I wrote that during a not so lucid moment!

Waking Life is interesting for its groundbreaking animation process. If you're into animation, almost anything by Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononuke's English version was penned by Neil Gaiman, screenwriter for MirrorMask) including Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, or Castle in the Sky. Catch Tim Burton's Big Fish. I enjoyed all the films mentioned so far by the others.

I'm probably the only one who thinks this, but I enjoyed Vanilla Sky. I hear Abre los Ojos is superior though. Anyone else like Memento and The Machinist?

reply

anything at all by terry gilliam, including brazil, baron mun, leaving las vegas, fisher king. he is amazing.

reply

I think you mean Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

reply

palehorse--
I highly recommend Obre Los Ojos; I understand the American version messed up the story, was not as creative visually and (even worse) has Tom Cruise. You would probably also like the original Russian version of Solaris.

I loved Memento almost as much as The Usual Suspects. Machinist is on my Netflix list. Talk about insanity: Requiem for a Dream; Pi-Faith in Chaos (these two are very dark); and the classics, Naked Lunch and Altered States. My all-time favorite is Repulsion (with a very young and heartbreakingly gorgeous Catherine Deneuve). This, of course, is Polanski, but I'm starting to go off a tangent here.

I'm going to have to say Altered States seemed really great up until the end and then it sort of just bombed for me. Some people might like what happened to the main character, though I was more interested in the scientific stuff at the beginning.

Love the films mentioned previous and slso Memento and Machinist

clockwork orange, american psycho, 2001: a space oddesy, american beauty and h2 odio are all very good movies, stange but deep

I can't believe I forgot to mention "The Saddest Music in the World"...possibly the strangest film I've seen...but worth the watch. Also visually gripping but not terribly great (in my opinion) was "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow".
