Why did I rent this movie??-Tim Burton wannabe?? + political rant

I love to read, and I love movies. So, when someone suggests a movie or I hear about it in conversation, or read a reference to it in an article, I jot it down next to the word "Netflix", in order to put it on my list.
As I watched this movie, I wanted to be involved, but I just couldn't. I kept thinking: this is a Jim Henson production, yet it should be sweetness and light. This movie should have been made by the king of surreal; Tim Burton and of course, musical score by Danny Elfman.
I understand that this movie was supposed to be an allegory-love your parents and don't even think of rebelling, but there was no reconciliation at the end, only a brief hug from the dad and a few tears from the daughter.
I'm still trying to figure out who told me to go rent this movie, because I simply didn't enjoy it.
Finally, a political rant. This movie takes place in England in the present day. A woman circus worker faints, is taken to hospital (using correct British English, there) and is presumably given an X-Ray which shows that she has either a tumor or cancer. She is taken into surgery well within a week (not specified in the movie) if not within days.
Now, I'm not from England, but I have friends, acquaintances and customers there and I consider myself better informed than most of my fellow Americans. I'm pretty sure that under England's socialized medicine, you'd be waiting a good long time for surgery, as in months or even years.
I remember sometime in the early 2000s (?) when a high-ranking member of the Canadian Parliament (and close friend of Hillary Clinton) came south of the border to have major surgery done. Why not do it in Canada; after all, your taxes pay for it, no????

I've lived in Canada, and I have plenty of friends and many close relatives in the UK. Yes, you have to wait for some NON TIME SENSITIVE surgeries. But if something is time sensitive LIKE A CANCEROUS TUMOR then it takes precedence and you get the surgery much more quickly. Because other non time sensitive needs are put off for the time sensitive ones.
Life expectancy is HIGHER in countries with socialized medicine than it is in the US.

Tim burton is a wanabe when you compare his movies to this.
And danny elfman, being reat composer as he is, just does not fit the mood this movie was trying to accomplish.

I don't think Burton is a wanna be but I wholeheartedly agree that he and Elfman were not called for in this movie. Brilliant as is!

The UK health care system is probably very similar to the NZ system - a mix of private/public care where if public hospitals can't cope with waiting lists, then they pay private hospitals to take on patients.

The more urgent and life threatening your illness is, the higher up you are on the list. It would be entirely reasonable to have surgery within a week if doctors believed you would not survive without having it immediately....however, if you were referred by your GP (instead of being rushed directly to hospital after fainting), I don't know how long the wait could be to see the specialist and get your results.

Thank you for that excellent explanation, not being British I wouldn't know all the details. I almost married a Brit years ago, but that is another story!

Happy and HEALTHY 2013 to you!

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer by an NHS cancer specialist and was successfully operated on six days later. The fact is, despite what your right wing media tells you, if you need urgently need treatment on the NHS you will get it, sometimes through a private care provider if your case is deemed a matter serious enough.

So please don't come on here putting down another country that you have no knowledge of. And last time I checked every European state had "socialised medicine" (using correct British English there, LOL) so why pick on the UK?

It's not as if the American health care system is perfect of is it? You are the richest country in the world yet:

01 - You have by far the lowest ratio of GP (general practitioner doctors, not sure if that needs Americanising) per head of population which leads to late diagnosing of illnesses and referral for treatment, which probably has something to do with...

02 - ...The U.S.A. having by far the highest death rate from preventable illness in the developed world.

03 - The highest infant mortality rate in the developed world.

You said:

"I remember sometime in the early 2000s (?) when a high-ranking member of the Canadian Parliament (and close friend of Hillary Clinton) came south of the border to have major surgery done. Why not do it in Canada; after all, your taxes pay for it, no????"

So the fact that 10 years ago a Canadian politician had major surgery in the U.S.A. is proof that socilised medicine doesn't work? How exactly do you work that one out? As an example say you were told you're probably going to die of cancer but there's a experimental treatment available in, say, Canada which may prolong your life. Surely you would be "north of the border" to receive that life extending treatment ASAP whether you'd paid into your countries health care system or not?

You got it, ace!

He/She was only talking about the UK specifically because that's where the movie is set.

That being said, I'm actually from the UK (London specifically) and I agree with everything you've said. My mum had a scan once and they found tumours in her stomach (both benign) and even though it wasn't a particularly time intensive surgery she was operated on within a fortnight. My stepdad had a problem with his leg and again was operated on in about a week even though it also wasn't too worrying.

Also - YEARS for surgery? Jesus what kind of hellhole do you think we're living in.

Don't mind this OP parroting what Fox News scares into them from the mouths of Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman and such. He probably thinks you have 'death panels' too.

I live in America and am appalled at the grip that 'crony capitalism' has on advancements that are the benefit for all citizens so that a couple of people can pocket money on other people's pain and suffering.

It's pretty damn douchy and people supporting such models of society clearly are not thinking for themselves nor are inclined to get information from a source outside their own little bubble.

Sorry OP, nothing against you, but sometime, you should go check out other sites on the internet besides IMDB and lay off the Fox News. Well, I won't say lay off Fox News. It's actually a pretty good comedy channel. :)

Do you actually believe CNN, M.S.L.S.D and obama's other spokesmedia are giving you the truth? They're all liars and crooks that have no interest in anything but their own self interests.

Tim Burton was not actually the first with this style. He was influenced by German Expressionism, as the director of this kind of was and...the director of bizarre music videos like this.

Now for anyone who wants to watch a German Expressionist film to see where this style came from. Below this paragraph is a link to The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari, of all that I've seen, the film that adopts this style the most

Overall I would call the people influenced by this (Stobe Harju, Tim Burton, Dave McKean) to be expressionist directors.

Maybe you should try and see the film Paperhouse (1988),overlooked but wonderful.

"I'm pretty sure that under England's socialized medicine, you'd be waiting a good long time for surgery, as in months or even years. " Yeah, it makes perfect sense they would wait months or YEARS to remove a tumor. Are you for real?

Listen I'm not British but I KNOW this. In the system of socialized medicine there's a scale of priority. Cancers and tumors are given VERY HIGH PRIORITY and are remedied IMMEDIATELY. Overweight people wanting to have a reduction of their stomach are given a lower priority.

Seriously, what reality do you live in?? Another ignorant yank, or perhaps a troll.

"This movie should have been made by the king of surreal." You're the king of the surreal on imdb - and that's saying something.

"I remember sometime in the early 2000s (?) when a high-ranking member of the Canadian Parliament (and close friend of Hillary Clinton) came south of the border to have major surgery done. Why not do it in Canada; after all, your taxes pay for it, no???? " And HOW is this IMPORTANT or RELATES to this movie??? You just looked for an excuse to spew your inane bile. Nutjob.

And how correct my assessment turned out to be. You learn to recognize the kind depending on what they write. Browsing through OP's comments it seems he's a geriatric fool putting a "leftists are bad" slant on EVERYTHING (talk about pathetic obsession) and not discussing movies themselves at all. Fortunately time is ticking for you. Tick tock, tick tock. Shouldn't you have more important things to do in life at that age??

Colin,

Your post makes the argument as to why fifteen year old kids shouldn't be allowed to post on the Internet; they simply haven't lived life and don't know sh*t from Shinola.

Have a nice life, snowflake.
