question that the movie didnt answer

how did all those ppl outside the house find out that they had the money?

reply

At one point we see Damian either putting money into envelopes for charity or opening mailed charity requests, and St. Peter warns him that responding will put him on a list that all charities access and will prompt further requests from a lot more. Obviously this little nugget of truth is handled in a completely surrealistic way (in my mind, perhaps the most surrealistic element of the film), but did give me a chuckle.

Since most of the movie was really told by Damien's perspective, we see the world through his eyes. The point of the charities overwhelming the house was a tip-off to how kids see things in exaggerated ways sometimes. This makes sense especially with Damien's imagination.

Did you forget that Anthony brought in several of his buddies, showed them each a small but still impressive pile of bills and gave them each a few quid, swearing them to secrecy? Do you think they could keep that pledge? Word gets around.

But I think the point of the OP was how come all those people arrived at the same time? If the friends had spilled the beans you'd think that people would be showing up in small groups randomly throughout the movie.

It might have been funnier that way if the doorbell rang during every scene and Dad had to turn someone away.

I agree with the second post. I think this was a result of the charity mail he responded to. As far as the timing, it probably had to do with it being close to Christmas which is when a lot of charities would be looking for money. Of course there is a bit of an unrealistic element to it, but I think it has an answer within the film.

You don't get hit up by charities much, do you? They are in full-on fund-raising mode 100% of the time all year long. Christmas time isn't any bigger push than normal.

In my country they definitely hike up activity just before the end of the financial year

In the book it was some of the kids at school that spilled the beans to their parents.

Much time has passed since your question but I just finished this movie and have some input on this. Not shown in the version I saw but in the deleted scenes was one that might explain why people were showing up. A family shows up at the house and the girl with them was one who had been given money at the beginning of the movie. One gets the impression that even though the girl had been asked not to say any thing, she had. The girls father spills out his tale of woe and the boy's father gives him a stack of cash. They go off and from the timing of other events it appears that they may have been the ones who spread the word that money could be had if they went to that house.
