England converting to Euros

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didnt England refuse to change to the Euro? I thought they still were (to this day) using the pound....

reply

You are right sir. It was a fiction used to drive the plot.

I don't think so.

At the time the script was written everyone expected the UK to adopt the Euro.
But opposition mounted and Tony Blair put an end to the project.
The 'noes' had it, at least for now. But (I suspect) it was too late to rewrite and reshoot 'Millions'.

But then... fantasy and reality are so interwoven in this film that one more flight hardly matters :-)

As to Shyalaman, I agree with your total but we may differ on the specifics.
'Wide Awake' bears a considerable resemblance to 'Millions'. Not quite as well done but much better than most critics claimed. I rank it with 'Sixth Sense' as one of Shyalaman's successes. I rate 'Unbreakable' and 'The Village' (another film the critics unfairly savaged) as semi-successes (so I guess my total would be 2 2/2 instead of 2 1/2). 'Signs' was a bunch of spooky omens leading to a wholly risible denouement. I haven't bothered to watch the latest one about the damp lady.

Thanks, jgravely. I was wondering about that since I was just in the UK (Scotland) and they were using Pounds Sterling.

ummm i dont know wether its me or not but i thought they lived in ireland (jus for the record im not from the uk) so if there were hints or something directing it towards them being in england i might not have noticed also maybe i missed the part where it said they were in england maybe

This excellent, excellent film (in my opinion) is set in Liverpool, which is certainly in England.

reply

Yeah the movie is definatly set in England. And yes, this story is fictious. It's not set in the future, or any event that has happened, it's just a made-up story to drive the plot.

Is it definitely set in Liverpool? How come all the kids at the school supported either United or City? Sounded like they had Mancunian accents to me.

reply

And in the shopping scene they were in 'the triangle' which is a main shopping area in Manchester.

reply

Manchester (Director Boyle and Writer Boyce grew up in Manchester), although they filmed in summer for more dependable weather.

reply

hmm...so is manchester pretty cool? Im thinking of moving to england but I dont know where...some people say "oh the north is better" and others say "oh no...the south is much better" So i dont know anymore. Ive heard the south is more expensive to live in....but i just dont know. Er anyways....I guess this is off topic....

I'm from Liverpool and I tohught it was set in Manchester or CHeshire or something, you can tell straight away from the accents, they are very different.

reply

of course its in Manchester because everybody supports United or City.
I love when the roobers get into the crowd of Newcastle in the game against Arsenal.

reply

I didn't know where the movie was set at first, but everyone supporting Manchester United kind of gave it away. :)

reply

Yeah - that means it couldn't have been in Manchester! :)

Seriously, though, the new housing estate was in Widnes, and the train that was robbed started from Liverpool Lime St station.

reply

It was around the Warrington/Widnes area, close to the Manchester-Liverpool line... I live near there, and the regional accent they used was from Widnes (Warringtonians have a more Mancunian acccent).
Hurrah for my district! =)

Now everybody in Europe's been forced to sign up to the Lisbon Treaty, (most populations without being given a referendum, or if they have, a 'NO' vote is ignored until they vote 'YES' - hello Ireland - the UK population would definitely have rejected the Treaty if their government had offered a referendum, but of course the UK government doesn't give a damn about the will of the people) it won't be long now until the UK is forced to take the Euro, as they are now forced to take legislation from Brussels.

they filmed around the north west in general, mostly along the cheshire plain (liverpool - manchester) fiofo is spot on. the housing estate is definitely widnes cos u can see fiddlers ferry cooling towers in the background, the bit in the shops was the triangle in manchester. the school scenes were in liverpool somewhere, the railway scene where he sees his mum, was filmed somewhere along the east-lancs preservation railway near Bury, and the end scene on the beach is formby beach which is inbetween Liverpool and Southport. hope this is of use to u all, sorry if i got as bit boring!!! lol (by the way I live in Stockport, near Manchester)

reply

Yes, and the station where the robbery took place is Liverpool Lime Street.

reply

You're right, neither England nor any of the countries in the UK opted to use the Euro currency. At the risk of sounding nationalist I think it would have made more sense to set the film in Ireland. The setting wouldn't be all that different but Ireland actually did switch to Euro.

reply

But this is just ficton based upon a novel.
