Truly one of the very worst films I have ever seen
I was stunned at the utterly puerile dialogue and situations, the supposedly amusing face-to-the-camera monologues, the muddled tone (is this a satire? Is this a film about relationships? Is this a romcom?) and what for me was incredibly amateurish filmmaking which Meet Market offers the viewer. I was cringeing throughout, embarrassed for the actors (especially for one of my favorites, Krista Allen) and pissed that I wasted a slot in my Netflix queue renting this.
Here is what was missing from this film: sex and humor. Yes there is a lot of sexy talk which is turned into wincingly juvenile (and devoid of even a chuckle) ranting but when the sex is actually filmed it is very prudish and devoid of heat. There are comic setups which fall completely flat. There is a promising premise which is not fulfilled in the film. I can only say that for me this was shockingly bad. If you are looking for a funny romantic and sexy romp with actors you like then you will be disappointed. This is a hamfisted attempt at satire that ends up bearing the marks of every single cliche we've ever seen, but the filmmakers have not managed to use the cliches to their advantage. Instead of having these deliberate cliches generating laughs because the director has made them amusing (like Scary Movie or Scream), the cliches seem to be unintentional and therefore just, well, cliches.
The problem with this movie is that because it lacks the two main ingredients for a romantic comedy (sex and humor) it has absolutely nothing at all to give it shape or to hold it up. And possibly worse: it's not "so bad it's good". Even with Elizabeth Berkeley deliberately cast to send us that message, it never manages to raise itself to the level of bad-funny. It's just bad-bad.
