Does Mona Sax live?

Does Mona Sax live at the end of "Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne" or does she indeed die as a result of being shot? :-)

I mean: she DID survive being shot at (read: minor head wound) before, right?

Thanks!

Bye for now

I actually strongly dislike the ending where she lives. It's not "Max Payne"-esque at all. Come on, how could you replace the very last shot in the game, of the washed out lips, and Max's final lines that just kick you in the nuts? You can't. Blasphemious.

Something out of a cheesy romantic comedy.

was just about to play it again but thanx, that rite I have beetten it on all the levels LONG ago, I think the real question is does She live @ the end of the original ( main ) ending you get from beeting the game 1nce? bkuz ***SPOLILER***(More so then b4) "Her twin is killed? " in the first?!! I was never convinced that there were two of them, think about it, She'z a very accomplished assassin I duno what the creators want Us to read into this but what is it mystical the way She keeps pulling the lazarus? Is She hopped up on as many goofballs as Max? & So therefore can live, function & fight for(hours?) into the game w/ bullets in her head? to unclear towards the end. basicly I think It was Her & only Her the whole time & no twin & I'm think'n She just may live, but sum of that is also just wishful thinkin' I guess cuz Shez such a gr8 character

SPOILERS:

At the end of the game on Detective and Hard Boiled, she dies.

If you finish it on Dead on Arrival, she lives. I assume this is the real ending.

reply

not 2 rant, but We also have 2 take on faith that She was shot in the head, as She said. She's so mysterious, it's hard to believe that any thing that happens w/ Her, actually happens. Max had visual hed wounds frem His bullet 2 the hed, but not Her.

Sounds encouraging. 

even if she didnt die by the shot, how could she survive the explosion?

reply

unless they(Game makers) r trying 2 b "respectful" of the dead, most of the tyime U will see the dead body fal, or wat not, but as far as We know Mona was still on the 1st floor & Max & Vlad fell to the basement. it was a large amt. of explosive, but the explosion wasn't that big.

Well stated. It's a noir love story.

Mona has been poorly written as a character in both MP 1 & 2. She's clearly shot through the head in the first one, only to come back in the sequel to get shot again and 'die'

I imagine that the game developers want continuity and include Mona in Max Payne 3

she's dead folks.

As Jshelter pointed out,Mona is dead. The real canon ending is the one where Mona is dead. I really dont like when people think that the alternate ending is the actual real ending, notice the word alternate before it. It was never meant too be the actual ending, otherwise that would have been the first ending, they just added it because as stated above, its a film noire love story that they thought maybe should have a good old classic happy ending. The real ending and canon which is going to be used for Max payne 3 is where Mona dies, and its the perfect ending anyways. Max is a character that will always be mourning the loss or death of someone close to him, someone he couldnt protect. A perfect ending that not only captures that momemnt once again, but also accepting the death of wife and baby girl. That to me is purified genious.

"We are willing to suffer, to die for the things we care about. For love, for the right choices, Because of her, I had solved the case". One of the best quotes in the game.

reply

In normal game mode, Mona dies. She lives after you play through on the hardest setting. But in actuality, Mona died from her gunshot wound. I think a lot of fans felt cheated by this but I felt that was intentional on the part of the writers. They wanted to wrench people's emotions at the end.

reply

I think the reason why Remedy chose to have an alternate ending was because they sold the rights of Max Payne to Rockstar the year it released and wanted to have some kind of closure with the character. Though the alternate ending is cool and all,it doesnt beat the original ending where she dies, where simply put is just beautiful.

reply

Personally I find it hard to choose between the two endings. It's like both ending share the same basic idea of Max finally being able to forgive himself and except his wife and daughter's death, but in different ways. In the 'Mona dies' ending, it's more of about how Max sees Mona's death as a way of letting go of the past. I especially love the second to last shot, with Max being discovered by the police, with a little smile under all his injuries. But I still love seeing the 'Mona lives' ending. Sure it's probably just me being soft at heart but having her live, is like the light at the end of Max's dark tunnel. With Mona he can finally move on. I know she was a murder suspect, but I always just assumed Max would have come up with a story which made her out to be just a damsel in the wrong place at the wrong time. But in the end, either ending works just as well. I just wish Rockstar didn't go back to having Max being morbidly depressed in the third game. That completely ruined the ending of this game.

WINGED FREAK...Terrorizes?....Wait till they get a load of me...

reply

Not really. There was still a lot max was to be depressed about. If you read the comic, it makes sense. Max was kicked off the force, branded a disgraced cop, and with everyone around him dying,it just seems natural that he would become an alcoholic and get addicted to painkillers. He accepted his wife's death, but it didnt meant he completely moved on from it, especially with his life is still a living hell.

I have read the Max Payne 3 comics but personally, I find them to be enjoyable but flawed. Kinda like how I feel about Max Payne 3's story. I get too much of a 'Rockstar' feel from it, like it's missing the wit and subtle sophistication of the first two games, written by Sam Lake. First off, I never figured Max to be a broken man ever since childhood. I always figured he was normal, carefree cop (with amazing gun skills) until the attack at his home. After the murder of his wife and child he becomes introverted, cynical and more violent. In the comics, it's your cliché, I had a bad childhood and that's why I'm moody and cynical. His father was the stereotypical, wife beating a$$hole and his mother becomes a drinker. Also wasn't it implied that Max killed his father to avenge his mother?

Once you got used to it, Max Payne 3 was a ton of fun and I applaud Rockstar for giving us one of the most violent and action packed games released this decade. But it's the writing that ultimately lets it down. It's less Max Payne and more GTA, and Max's character is completely different to how he was in the first two games. They turned him into a generic, angry, 'Bruce Willis' type action hero. He's constantly dropping f-bombs, shouting at people, and whining about how he wants to kill himself. And yes, I know Rockstar wanted to show Max at his lowest point, but this should have been a gradual thing, or maybe even, as the game goes along he become less depressed. But no, he's just an angry drunk a$$hole from beginning to end.

WINGED FREAK...Terrorizes?....Wait till they get a load of me...

reply

Well he was a carefree cop afterwards, graduating from the adademy and going up the ranks. The comics felt natural to me,explaining his origin almost. He is a man who has always had tragic events happen to him and its natural of how they portrayed him in MP3. Plus,I dont know if you know, but Sam Lake co-wrote comic, so it isnt just Rockstar's influence. And yeah it was implied, which again feels natural. I mean when you think about it,they tried to show that Max had a soft spot for women, especially those who get hurt at the expense of others. Also, with killing his father to avenge his mother, it makes him more believable of how much of a family man he wanted to be when he met Michelle and had a daughter. His father was a real prick and knowing that,he wanted to be a better father. But with the tragic turn of events,it's stripped from him, and then goes out to avenge them. How is that flawed? It makes sense and its a lovely backstory to read.

As for the game,it has its flaws, but its a masterpiece in the end. They way Rockstar portrayed him was just perfect. I think a lot people were coming into this game thinking he would be the same character, but he really isnt. He still has his monologues, still talks in similes and metaphors, but all those years of drinking, addicted to painkillers, and growing old,he has become more cynicall, more sinister, and more dark. If the comic really tried to prove one thing, its that Max always has and always will be a flawed character. Tragedy strikes him all the time, people get hurt because of him,and he is just a depressful being. So for me,since he was older and more cynnical, all the cursing and yelling felt natural. Again, they had his monologues, and the way he looks at the world in such a bleak light still there, its just a more older max trying to make sense of the world around him and the events that are unfolding. Maybe you didnt like the story just cause Remedy wasnt invovled, even though Sam and the rest of Remedy thought the game was brilliant, but in the end Max Payne 3 was an amazing game, story, gameplay and overal experience wise.

reply

I didn't know about Sam Lake being a co-writer. I may have to read the comic again. I just remember a lot of it feeling heavy handed.

Max Payne 3 had a good story for a Rockstar game but it just didn't have that Max Payne touch. There wasn't really any reason for Max to get involved in everything that happens to him during the second half of the game. Also, of course Lake and the Remedy crew are going to praise the game. They're friends with Rockstar and they want the next instalment of Max Payne to do well. I still like Max Payne 3 but personally I think some of the combat was ruined due to the 'Gears of War' style cover system and some sloppy euphoria moments and the story was great for a gritty noirish tale, but I think it could have been better for the third Max Payne game. None of the characters in 3 were nearly as memorable as those in 1 and 2.

WINGED FREAK...Terrorizes?....Wait till they get a load of me...

reply

Well it still had the touch in my opinion. The noire elements, the dark story, the monologues, the flawed but amazing story driven character, the brooding and eerie music, all staples of the series. Well there really was no reason for Max to stay,he was just trying to get himself out. After Fabiana died, his mission seemed pointless as a bodygaurd. But his mission turned into proving himself, trying to get to the bottom of it,trying to get himself out of the hole he dug for himself. If he couldnt save Fabiana,he was going to make sure he saved Giovana. And well yeah they are friends but Remedy has the right to say what they want, its not like they are entitled to praise the game for no reason. Sam and the rest of the team wouldnt have gotten involved with the project if they didnt think it was neccessary to,or didnt like it was a great game, but they did.

And remember, the cover system is only there as an addition. Its not really neccessary. Does it help? yes,and personally I felt like they did an amazing job with it. Same with the left trigger aiming, it makes the gunfights more intense and more realistic. What Rockstar did with Max Payne 3 was simply amazing,I just hope and wish maybe another sequel could be seen, one last final game for Max.

But thats not constructive criticism, thats just blatant nitpicking. He complained about shooting 20 guys in an aiport hangar? who does that? Anyway, I get people didnt like it but in reality there really is no reason to not like it,thats the way I feel. Rockstar made a max payne fan, even with their own twist on it. The gameplay was never an issue for me. Just cause you get out of shootdoge cause you bump into a wall doesnt make it shoddy gameplay,it makes it more realistic and intense. I find it pretty useless to discuss the game without someone trying to make it seem like the worst game out there. It definetly isnt, and it still is a Max Payne game.

reply

Like I said, I do think this he's a little harsh on the game. I do think it's a good game and after a while you get used to the gameplay and it becomes fun. But I agree with the problems he brought up like characters constantly telling you to move on when you want to explore, Max constantly whining about his life, too many overlong and unskippable cutscenes and the fact that the cover system is often a necessity, rather than just a helpful option. I do like the game for what it is, and I often go back to it just for score attack. But it is flawed and while I'm glad you liked it, for me it could have been so much more. I'm glad I bought it but I hope if they ever get around to making a fourth game, they take a little more care.

WINGED FREAK...Terrorizes?....Wait till they get a load of me...

reply

Well there never is a perfect game, every game is flawed in their own way. Even the first two Max Payne games have their flaws, but that doesn make them any less of a great game. You probably know this but the reason why cutscenses were unskippable was because there were no loading times in between the game. Now were the cutscenes frequent, yes. Some I would say were kind of uneccessary but overall I didnt mind them. I always go back to playing it if I dont have anything else to play, its a great game. Hopefully we will see a fourth game.

I think "Max Payne 3" is a great action game, but it just didn't capture my imagination like the first two games in the series did; the sleaziness was different (in an "Uncharted" kind of way for me), I missed the graphic novel panels, the supporting characters weren't as alluring or mysterious to me (no Mona, Nicole Horne, Alfred Woden, Vlad, Punchinello family, The Cleaners, Vinnie Gognitti, Jim Bravura, Detective Winterson, etc...I did like Passos & Giovanna, but no one else left much of an impression on me), and Max felt a little out of place to me (I didn't like the "Breaking Bad" haircut deal either). The action, the stage layouts, the soundtrack, I think it's all great stuff, it just didn't feel like the other Max Payne games to me.
