Zippo

In the version I saw, the opening scene is of Emily meeting up with an older guy (wearing a camo' shirt) but I didn't learn his name? He looked like Zippo? When they meet Zippo at the campsite, she doesn't seem to know him? Towards the end of the movie when Brad sees his mum, he asks Emily where they are. "I don't know. I came here because (he said?) he/it would set me free." (at least I think thats what she said). Brad replies "And did you find what you were looking for?" "No I didn't, I didn't find it at all, all i fould was you." Can someone set me straight. I have yet to watch the movie again so I maybe confused but was it Zippo with Emily in the opening scene?
