Full explanation;

Emily met the guy somewhere in life (Zippo), that explains the sequences before the credits where he meets her at school, they spend time together etc. Turns out Zippo is some sort of ghost, spirit or demon, or maybe just a psycho who can talk to the spirits. He calls himself Satan but he could be any of the above.

He tells Emily if she brings her three friends to the beach he’ll give her freedom. From what? Maybe she was depressed, or felt crowded by her relationship with Brad. Remember her trying to convince him she’s not ‘a good girl’ so he’ll go off her? Maybe she just has the hot for Zippo instead.

So it’s her idea that they all go away for the weekend to his beach. He kills Tracey, Brad and Gary and captures Emily as his sex slave (as someone else on this board said), making her live forever on his (now haunted) beach with him and not giving her freedom at all, as she says when Brad asks her if she got what she came from and she says ‘not at all’.

It says in the beginning three teenagers died there, so he killed them all except Emily. The three he killed (Brad, Gary and Tracey) are all stuck there, haunting the place they died and living their ordeal over and over again, seeing flashbacks of what happened to them and thinking they’ve been there before. Remember them trying to work out whose idea it was to go, but none of them can remember? They think it’s Emily but she doesn’t read surfing magazines.

Emily might be dead or might not, but is being held there against her will by Zippo to be his demon lover or whatever. She ‘travels’ with the others as they relive the day of their deaths but can see them because she’s been damned to by how she tricked them.
