The white sheets

That scene was stolen right from Ashes and Diamonds (Popiol i diament)of Andrzej Wajda, but (like everithing else in the Angelopoulos' film) was overdone.

The White Sheets - the Odyssey - Greek Fleet - the sheets are sails and are pure and virginal and vibrant flowing forward, the masts are broken from the ships, from the bodies, landed, rooted into the earth, holding up their sails, holding up hope and life, but forever rooted in one spot, the sails are maidens waiting to sail.

Not overdone - it was not done enough.

How to interpret the man who has been shot in the abdomen and is struggling forward?

As he advances, his left hand leaves small blood stains on the pure white sheets he touches, before falling to the ground and dying.
