This movie is like a cross between...

... Jacob's Ladder and The Butterfly Effect.

Both movies I enjoyed. Overall, I was pleased with this film.

And like Dead Man.

LOL! I thought the same thing than the OP!

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

To me the overall tone and mood was more similar to Donnie Darko, Jacob's Ladder (the plot was so obviously taken from JL) and to a degree, Silent Hill. More the former two than the latter, although atmospherically, it was at times quite similar to Silent Hill with the way some of the shots were taken and the ambient music in the background. I am thinking more of the games than the first movie.

My thoughts exactly, Timescrew!

WIth a hint of Machinist, though that could just be the involvement of Jennifer Jason Leigh.

That too.

I don't know those stories. Before watching it I assumed it was based on Jack London's Star Rover - which I've seen printed as The Straight Jacket. Now I see it as a hybrid of Star Rover and The Time Traveler's Wife - though of course the latter was published some time after the film. All stories can probably be deconstructed as a bit of this and a bit of that so perhaps best to just say I enjoyed the film, perhaps more the 2nd time around.

And Twelve Monkeys.

With all these movies listed (OP's and in subsequent comments) that resemble "The Jacket", I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Altered States (1980)" for the isolation chamber / hallucinations / tripping idea. Or, for that matter, "Source Code (2011)" for jumping in and out of the alternate time concept. Those were the first two movies "The Jacket" brought to my mind. I haven't seen Jacob's Ladder in decades (2 of them), but thanks for reminding me of it. I'll have to give it a watch again soon.

I saw Source Code, I liked it. I haven't seen Altered States though. I'll have to see if I can rent that. Thanks for the suggestions.
