For those who aren't Canadian and didn't hear about this the first time around, he is a comprehensive description of the real-life events:

That was a fascinating article detailing this horrible story. Thank you so much elleng!

Wow thanks for posting that article! I came on this board wondering if this was a true story, just saw the movie on Lifetime and it creeped me out. The article scares me even more. *shiver*

How could anyone actually do something like that to themselves? I mean, insert a tube into your own arm after cutting yourself like that? You would have to have an abnormal tolerance for pain or something, even with drug to deaden the pain.

Well, it seemed like this guy was a total sociopath, their brains are basically wired to go to any and every length to get and keep what they want, whether it be lifestyle or money with no empathy for people or animals or even their own physical pain. I'm sure it hurt, but his thinking was probably, he'd put up with anything as long as it ensured he didn't get caught.

Him being a doctor though I wonder if he had some prescription meds on hand. He may have just injected himself with whatever pain killer they use for people getting stitches.

reply

Painkiller or not I could never cut myself like a piece of meat. I mean it had to register with him on some level that that was HIS arm he was cutting on.

*nods* It was a means to an end though. His desire and his need to maintain his depraved lifestyle and not get caught was fulfilled by cutting and inserting the tube. A sociopathic personality will do anything and everything to keep from getting caught.

I mean yeah, I could never ever do that to myself. ACK! But for him, he knew he wasn't doing permanent damage to himself so he was more like, "Meh...whatever..." So crazy I know but yeah, he was a nut bar!

Being a doctor he would have seen much worse than operating on his own arm.

A sociopath will do anything to keep their self from being caught, and in many cases, actually believing the lies they tell to maintain their "normal" lives.

In the case of the tube insertion, its a simple matter for a doctor to do. You should look up a PICC line and see what is done with that insertion, which is put directly into your vein! Novacaine can numb the area quite easily for this type of minor procedure the doctor did to himself. Another thing to think about is that the doctor IS a sociopath and it would be relatively easy for him to disassociate himself from what he was doing to his own arm.

I did a bit more research on John Schneeberger on Wikipedia, which included other articles about him. Check out also the town of Kipling, Saskatchewan on Wiki which has other articles to read about his deportation hearings-which of course he did end up getting deporeted back to South Africa, moving in with his mother. Does the name Norman Bates come to mind? ACK indeed!

Wow! Thanks for the research pointers! Being a Momma's Boy would explain a lot, like his feelings of entitlement and of being the only victim in the situation. ugh. And I suddenly can't spell entitlment.... *facepalm*

I just can't understand what the people at the crime lab were thinking. So they had trouble getting blood from his arm? Why not get a saliva sample in the first place, it's the less invasive procedure to begin with.

Thank you for posting that article
It was even more chilling than the film

Thanks. Always can count on someone at IMDB getting the real story.
