Horror, comedy, scares and fun -- this movie nailed it.
It's hard being a horror fan. You have to wade through so many pointless, stupid movies made by people who care little about the final product. And then along comes that one movie that's so well made, so everything you love about the genre, that there's almost a sense of accomplishment. Such was the case with "The Hazing."
I know the cover is painfully bad, but this thing's written and directed by Rolfe Kanefsky, who has somewhat of a reputation for putting together a good horror script. (His 1991 film "There's Nothing Out There" beat Scream at the smart-self-referential-horror-movie game by several years.)
I won't go on and on about the plot. I'll just say this: Halloween night, college kids locked in a haunted house, evil wizard played by Brad Dor... Dori... uh, Chucky. It does Evil Dead worship *right*. You really can't predict who's going to live or die -- me and my brother were constantly joking about how one character was an obvious easy kill, and time and time again, they survived. :)
And while things are always slanted more towards comedy than horror, again, it's done right. The acting, directing, lighting, sets, it's all good.
My only complaint is that when people were posessed by Brad, they grew fuzzy white eyebrows. Which didn't even make sense, 'cause if you look, Brad's just sporting his normal eyebrows there. Nothing Einsteinian about them. Other than that, badass movie. My complements to the chef.
