Even the Mods don't like it!

Looks like they cleaned house on the board for this movie. This was easily the worst animated film to win an oscar, I'm glad this movie is pretty much forgotten.

I haven't forgotten it! It's still my favorite movie and I still watch it regularly :)

I normally just ignore movies that I hate (choosing to focus positively on the ones that I like) but hearing that this trite drivel was recognized by the AMPAS made it seem imperative that I at least comment against the tide of public opinion as it were.

I know we were all excited about the possibilities of this new high tech tool back then but not all CG, all-star voice-overed, and all-hit soundtracked movies are automatically good. There is a lot of derivative, and pointless big studio CG animation out there (i.e. Robots, A Fish Tale, that Madagascar sequel with the just the penguins, maybe Antz to name a few).

What is common to most of these vapid formulaic projects is that one can see the ham-fisted brainstorming session behind it. First, pander to a target audience. What cute animal, anthropomorphized object(s), or exotic yet easy to animate setting can we use? Oh, penguins are very popular now. Perfect. (>I am referring to the surprise hit March of the Penguins for the youngsters). A story with a simple, unarguable moral for the kiddies ("it's ok to be different"). And Robin Williams and his frenetic riffing!! ooh yeah. Why not ask every current celebrity to come in and do voiceovers, quick, cheap, and frontloaded with both their own fans and Academy patrons. What about the CG animation? it is so expensive? we can motion capture/render a few (real) dancers in baggy trousers.... and then press "copy"? Good, good! Hey, we can press "copy" like 10,000 times and fill the screen! yes, brilliant! Finally, gimme a list of popular songs that we can get for reasonable licensing fees. Classics and current ones that will also bring in lots of industry insider voters and built-in fan base. Let's see... can we possibly have this all ready by the holiday season? yep. Instant dial it in hit.

I was trying to watch this last night with the family, but I got too... incensed is the best word... by the blatant manipulation. I felt the same way about a certain Broadway hit musical that everyone raved about. Sometimes somebody needs to just say, "but the Emperor has no clothes".
