Their mother took it a little badly, didn't she?

I thought the scene in which she discovers them having sex was way over the top. The movie was clearly hoping to hang all its critical plaudits on this scene but I thought it was totally overacted.

To be honest, the movie as a whole was a very opportunistic depiction of incest. It didn't try to get behind Jere or Meme's mentality or to really explain the nature of their emotions towards one another. Incest was simply presented as yet another calamitous horror-story that can strike at the heart of middle-class domesticity. Proper dialogue was severely lacking throughout. The film hoped to garner acclaim for its controversial subject matter alone, and furthermore that its audience would overlook a spare story and flat characterisation.

I also thought she took it too badly, but we all react differently to situations, so there is no one way or correct way. Maybe, her reaction was the correct one for her.
Apart from that, I disagree with you on all other points. The movie very clearly showed that Jere and Meme were in real love (just like any other lovers). Although its true that both Jere and Meme did not speak a lot but then that enhanced their characters and made you pause and think. I liked this movie and I think it tries to project the story as realistic as possible.
By the way, those who have seen the Taboo movies (the Kay Parker ones) will find some scenes very similar.
Watch it.

I think her reaction was quite crazy, but imagine the shock... Even though I cannot quite imagine it, I'd still say it was depicted very realistic, without the music or camera filters typical for American (mostly) cinematography and all that surrounding drama...
However I am a bit surprised she'd end up completely loosing her mind, but since human psychology is as complex as space, it is probably also a very common case.

As for the depiction of the sister-brother relationship, I'd also say I did not feel it, it was all too fast, we jump into already established sexual and emotional bond and consequently cannot relate. I am not afraid of these kind of taboos and films conveying them, but I think this film lacks the gradual process of revealing it as well as elaborating a bit better that connection, whether in terms of dialogue or facial expressions... so in the end the movie may seem like just an excuse to film erotic scenes with a ticklish theme and we're not quite sure what it was all for.

For example, movies that dealt with the same matter and who managed to portray it in a more "successful" way (maybe the movie Gemini did not want to do the same) are Cement Garden and Close my eyes, wouldn't you say? ;)
