I thought the ending made sense in light of **SPOILER**

I thought the ending made sense considering how inexperienced she clearly was as a therapist, even as a medical student and also with regard to her "mentor".

It reminded me of movies like The Village and The Machinist, each of which had endings that were explainable... totally different from The Ring in that sense...

I would tend to agree that Don was in her head - I didn't catch that the tv characters were the actors in the actual plot... In the end they show Don disappear near the end of the hallway so that would indicate to me he's fictitious.

Anyway the process that it puts the audience member through is engaging and interesting.

Some of the script I thought was not too developed but it didn't ultimately matter to me, I think it's worth a watch... After all the director was 23... I actually liked that there weren't a lot of bells and whistles, it just followed an idea through to its conclusion.

I agree with statement that Don was in her head. He even tells "You know where to find me" when she leave, which is not really explained in "real" life of her therefore leaving most logical option that he was her mind creation.

I have been thinking about this one for a while and I almost rented it again but didn't want to wait two days. if don was in her head, then how did everyone interact with him? Or was that in her head too? All the nurses kept talking about don??

Copperfield has a point; why DID other ppl acknowledge his existence if he was only a delusion in her own mind?? Otherwise, great film, with outstanding acting especially by the female lead. It's funny, but at the very beginning of the film my hubby said how much Don looked liked Angelina Jolie... well surprise surprise LOL!

I also have a feeling that the writers of Shutter Island may have ripped off the basic plot/twist of this film... it wouldn't surprise me.

Well, at least as far as I understood it, "Malachi" was the man lurking outside the window, but that is also revealed to be the name given to the electro-convulsion therapy machine, so I believe that the man was simply a physical manifestation of the looming threat of electro-shock therapy, and, effectively death. This is why they shaved Opie's head before he died, he was headed for electro-shock therapy. That's what I got out of it anyway, hope it helped :)

That was my take too -- that Malaki represented the threat of having to resort to ECT.

I fully agree...

I also thought the ending made perfect sense; was it somewhat predictable? Yes... But, overall just like you said it did fit the situation and I felt the film was done well....

These people who automatically cop to 'Oh, that was such a cheeeeezy, "feel good" ending' have just been reading WAAAAAAY too much Stephen King where NOBODY is nice, EVERYONE is an @ss h o l e and the endings are tediously ALWAYS bad...

I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!
