I may be wrong so feel free to correct me, but what I got from it was that when he was stabbed at the end he actually died and like his sister implied, everyone gets to go to a heaven of their making.

I actually feel the vague ending kind of spoiled it for me...that and the fact that it was about a half hour too long.
