The scene with the Grandmother (spoilers)

I feel like I understood most of this movie fairly well except the part about Yumi's Grandmother. Her mom tells her to go get her, she sees a burn hole in the shoji screen (made by her mom's cigarettes?) looks through and sees her Grandmother hanging. Did the Grandmother kill herself? Why? Or did the mom do it? Or did the Mom happen to know what the Grandmother had done and for some sick reason wanted Yumi to see it? I don't know what to make of it :P

Yumi says her grandmother tried to protect her from her mother's abuse. Seems to me the mother decided to put an end to her interference so she'd have full control over her daughter. For child abusers it's all about power and control. Perhaps the grandma threatened to tell the police about the abuse, and that was the last straw?

I also thought that’s why she didn’t like peep holes. She might look through and see her dead grandmother again.
