Translation?

It is a good movie. ;)

(1) But I believe a lot is lost in translation. A number of jokes are either very cultural or embedded in the language. Maybe those who understand most of the jokes/humor can share with us.
;)

(2) Likewise, the song that is sung by the grandmother is not translated/subtitled. Can someone please kindly translate?

Thanks

I agree with you in the fact that it may has a very cultural script, not only of the country (I'm am from Argentina myself) but also of the kind of life that is lead in a certain neighborhood (El Once) in Buenos Aires. I can't remember exactly what jokes or words might have been difficult for "outsiders" to understand but you can ask for some in particular and I'll be glad to help you.
As regards to the song it's not in spanish. I think it's in hebrew or polish, and the original version hasn't got a translation either. So I can't help you with that :( You should ask someone who knows those languages.
Of course, great movie: smart, well writen, good performances. I dare say the best 2004 argentinian movie.

Both of the songs the grandmother sings are in Yiddish. I'll try to get translations & post them here ASAP. My friend from Argentina tells me that the language is more slangy & salty than the subtitles suggest.

Zay gezunt!

The song that the abuela sings is in Yiddish, and it's title (ironically) is something like "My Left Arm". It's a sentimental love song, and kind of a fitting ending to the movie. The character was probably a Yiddish cabaret singer back in Poland.

Actually, as the DVD extra on Making of, briefly explains that the singer and actress Rosia Londer (the grandmother) is a diva of Yiddish singing whose real story resembles the one of her character. A google search on her reveals several articles written in Spanish telling her story in singing and performing with husband Henri Gerro. You can buy their music on-line.

Loved the movie, loved the song at the end. She is an oustanding singer it seems.
