It is great to see Argentina is making such films

I had the feeling that Argentina has been locked in a couple of genres in the past few years: the typical not very well-acted drama, the poor guy from a villa who struggles with society, some comedies with obvious humor, etc. Finally, I see something different. 'El Abrazo Partido' is a wonderful film. Funny, entertaining, even deep in some ways.

Some of the movies I watched recently and liked are Rosarigasinos (2001), Familia Rodante (2004) and Valentín (2002). Any recommendations?

here are my recommendations:

La Niña Santa (2004), that's original!
Nueve Reinas (2000), if you haven't seen it already
Garage Olimpo (1999), a bit tough to watch, but great anyway
Vidas Privadas (2001), yes, the Fito Paez movie...
Esperando al Mesías (2000), earlier movie by the director of 'Abrazo partido'
Roma (2004), if you like Aristarain this is your movie
El Día que me amen (2003), different sort of comedy, don't watch if you dislike the actors involved, it won't work

An old argentinian film I really liked is "Crónica de un niño solo" (1964) by Leonardo Favio.

Among the recent ones:

Tan de repente (2002) by Diego Lerman
(maybe because, at the moment, I was very fond of Carla Crespo)

Nadar Solo (2002) by Ezequiel Acuña

El Perro (2004) by Carlos Sorín

Firstly, I'd like to say this is an excellent film. The writing is especially outstanding. If you like "indie" type films, without all the stars and latest technical "wow" (that never makes up for basics anyway), you will enjoy this one.

"The Motorcycle Diaries" is considered at least partly Argentinian. It's a good film in any case.

The last really enjoyable, fully Argentinian film I saw was "Nine Queens." "The Holy Girl" was on many best of lists last year, though I didn't see it myself.

You can find a good list by doing a search for "Argentina films" and you get a link to the New York Times which will list movies by any country, with reviews and recommendations. Good luck.

'El Aura (2005)' by Fabián Bielinsky. One of the best films I've seen in the last year or so. Excellent neo-noir. Sadly, Mr. Bielinsky suddenly died recently. It was only his second feature. A great loss for filmdom.
