Not really... I saw the whole 1st part and I think it was just that Jessica was so different to how she wanted her daughters to be. You're right though, I can't even think of a more evil character!

after part one i went out and borrwed the book from the library. Although i fell in love with jack it was traumatising to watcvh him give in to Megs Wiles - yes i hate her too (you knwo taht saying about evil triumphing if good men to nothing? well meg was evil...so she couldnt have stopped her mother from RUINING HER SISTERS LIFE). So yes i was very angry wiht jack after he slept with meg....and then i felt sohorrible for him when she faked the pregnancy (although a little part of me was like "tahts what you get!".....i just wish the ending hadnt been so disatisfying! So yes...anyway i am sitting herea dn weeping for jack adn billy and jessica too becuase everything was so sour for her

Yeah,

Of all of Courtenay's books, Jessica is my least favorite. In all his other books, everyone gets more or less what's coming to them - the gutsy, hard-done-by hero(ine)s build a wonderful life and the antagonists go off with tails slinking between legs. It's a little darker then that, of course, but Jessica was really depressing. Every decent character dies and Meg and Hester get away with it. And is it just me, or did they have to rely on some pretty thin logic to get uis to believe that you couldn't tell the difference between someone who'd just had a kid and someone who hadn't?

But he wrote based on a true story...Jessica really did exist...which means that the EVIL BITCH hester lived too :(

it's my favourite of all of courtenys books

and i think that is because he doesnt fudge the truth to make a better story.
i dont like stories that always have happy endings
this one was realistic

She is pure evil i agree. and meg she is selfish and just doesn't have i nice bone in her body thanks to her upbringing by Hester and her lust for advancement. It makes me think what would have meg done if Jack was still alive and came back from the war? Jack would not be plaesed and go after jesse,and Meg would most likely turn on her mother but on secongd thought they would just tell more lies about jess to keep them apart.

Sometimes it's more fun to think of the 'what if's' than what happened.

I Argee. She is. It would be great with Bryce would make another copy of if Jack didnt die or wat happened after to like Joey and Meg and hester. It said that Joey was a bad sport so i would wonder how the wool shep would be run and about the great depression. It would be BRILLANT if he did but he probalay would'nt. I mite go and send a readers reveiw on his site and ask him but he prob wont.

yer it was a true story so can't blame Bryce for it, al together one of my fave books from him! Thoroughly depressing! but very good!

I'm not much on alternative "what if" stuff. Real life is hard and cruel so there is really no reason to fluff the truth with feel good story book endings. It gives people a sense of thinking bad things don't really happen to good people, only bad people suffer.
Just take a gender at our world today and look at all the suffering billionaires.. The rest of us have it made, hu?
