Is there DVD with English subtitle?

I've seen the whole thing with my ex-girlfriend. She brought this movie in 3 DVDs when she came back from home. It was all in Russian but I read the book not too long before then, I remembered almost every dialog of it, I didn't have a problem watching it (I do understand basic Russian). However, now I'm thinking it would be nice to have the movie, but would like to have English subtitle since it would be nice to watch it with someone who is interested in it. If anyone know, let me know! Thank you.

You've probably found it by now. In case you haven't, it does exist with subtitles that are alleged to be in English. They range from unintelligible to reasonably good. You might have less than two seconds to read two full lines of dialogue. Sometimes the subtitles start to the left of the screen, then run off the right side of the screen. Sometimes the translations would have been done better by an 8-year old with the transcript in one hand and a Russian-English dictionary in the other.

Despite all that, this is one of the most amazing productions I've ever seen. I watched it this week and have ordered the book. I'll probably enjoy it again so much that I'll turn around and buy the DVD set with the worst subtitles in human history.

I agree. The subtitles are horrendous, indeed abysmal, but if you grasp the basic story and understand the dynamic between all of the characters, then all you need to do is stick with it and look more deeply at the various motivations with which the characters operate. The whole story plays out like an Aeschylean tragedy and the impact of Dostoevsky's novel will not be lost on you.

It looks like the subtitles were taken line for line from the free Google Books version of The Idiot: http://books.google.com/books?id=Xmpfd_wBsnIC&dq=the+idiot&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=tHadJrT_q4&sig=jsEJtBEzHWIiU-uTT9CSoBO7tE8&hl=en&ei=hspUS6XvGpK4lAeVq7yTBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBYQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=&f=false

Would you please tell me how you got the English subtitles to come on? I ordered the DVD & have my book club coming over to watch it, but all the writing on the screens for making selections are in Russian, which I can't read. There are no instructions in English anywhere that say how to do this. Thank you.
