This was a great cartoon until I realized that by the time the live action series started, just about almost all the characters on this show except for Alf are DEAD as a result of the destruction of planet Melmac.

How did the planet blow up? The ending credits give that sense of impending doom/sadness where everybody is singing.
shareIt is mentioned in a episode of ALF that there was a nuclear war, and that the missiles blew up his planet. It's the episode where ALF keep trying to phone the President of the USA, and Willie gets arrested by the FBI. It is very early in the first season.
Didn't ALF say in one episode that everyone on MelMac turned on their hair dryers at the same time and that's what blew up MelMac? He may have just said it as a throwaway joke in that particular episode. Unless it's the same episode as the one where Willie was arrested.
