Why explain? I mean, don't you have nicknames in your family that no outside person really understands? Sometimes they just develope and remain. Let me give you an example: I have a cousin and his name is David. I call him Cousin Garner. It's an insider only I know and until this day, he doesn't really get why I call him that way but it has just become usual.
