shareDepends what time of year he fell in. If he fell in in the fall-winter (it was supposedly September), the intial decomposing odors would be kept down by cold weather and freezing until next spring, by which time the body would be mostly decomposed.
Plus the house may have been on the other side of prevailing winds.
