Can someone explain this movie to me (SPOILERS)?

I was loving the movie until things started getting extremely confusing. And usually I can follow movies quite well.

And why did Dorothy kill himself? So stupid. What was his ego and what wasn't? Wtf was going on

They were probably all egos of his and nothing was real, he probably never left his cell.

it is a bad movie made to appear as if it is deep or has some kind of meaning.
I mean, come on, the bit with all the PHDs talking over the credits?
