Can't Believe People Actually Like This Movie

Very poor script:

a cajun fisherman who can't swim?
how many gunshots were fired a point blank range AND MISSED?
how many times did LDP "escape" only to be beaten up and recaptured?
what happened to the $3 million?
if you are going to hide $3 million, wouldn't you mark it better?
three days of diving - no luck. One night dive (w/sharks & injuries) - jackpot.
why does grandpa hold on to the fishing rod and let it pull him 100 yards out?
how did the drill suddenly work perfectly after being blown up and shorted out?
did the red diver not care that the other guy tried to drown him by the car?
why does KS need scuba gear to collect water samples?
anyone know how hard it is to strike oil in 10 feet of swamp water?
did the police not notice the smoke and explosions coming from upsteam?
sure looked like a great white to me (although bull shark line was funny)?
coolio was rediculous - what a stereotype gansta.
wasn't coolio holding KS when the boat blew up - he dies, she's unharmed.
why is this rated R?

worst movie I've seen in a long time

Sort it out most of the things youve said are wrong

I saw this one the other day and i have to agree with you. It was very very poor. Its never a good sign for a movie when you are begging for the main character to be killed off.

Well, of course it's a terrible script, it's a made for DVD B (at best) movie. Lots of people like these because of the amusement generated by watching these cringe-worthy exercises in rhetoric and hyperbole.

On to your points, several of which I will have to rebuff;

how many gunshots were fired a point blank range AND MISSED?
Not counting the rounds fired by the hunting party in the 'we all sail for shark tail' thing, and assuming as a HIT a bullet fired that achieves its goal, the shots are:
01 - Into the twonks thigh. HIT
02,03,04 - Into the radio on the Bitter End. - HIT HIT HIT
05, 06 - Into the shark from the boat. - PROBABLE PROBABLE
07 - At the bad guy as LDP is having a bowie knife thrown in him. - MISS. (Understandably, though, I feel.)
08,09,10,11,12 - Fired by Coolio as a gesture of frustration. HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT
13,14 - Fired down the length of the boat (so not point blank). MISS
15,16,17 - Supressive fire. HIT HIT HIT
18 - Fired down the length of the boat (so not point blank). MISS
19,20 - Into the shark at long range. HIT HIT
21 - At LDP through the windshield. MISS (Though a bullet traveling through glass WILL be deflected, so anything other than a miss would be implausible.
22 - At Coolio in the bridge. MISS
23 - At LDP who's holding the trunk with the money. HIT

For me that's a pretty good score. 16 of 23 in stressful circumstances by untrained shooters. I may have missed one or two shots, of course, but still. It does occur to me that 23 is the combined load of the two guns used, and they both run out at the appropriate point.

How many times did LDP "escape" only to be beaten up and recaptured?
Actually technically recaptured THEN beaten up. Once.

What happened to the $3 million?
When the shark is eating Coolio, the box breaks. The money is distributed thereby into the river.

If you are going to hide $3 million, wouldn't you mark it better?
I might, yeah, but I'm not a cajun hick with an IQ measured into dress sizes.

Three days of diving - no luck. One night dive (w/sharks & injuries) - jackpot.
I don't know what the problem is here. This is the plot, right? Without the shark this would be no story at all. Or do you find it implausible that the search itself takes three days and a night? How long should it take?

why does grandpa hold on to the fishing rod and let it pull him 100 yards out?
You've never gone fishing, clearly. If you're prone to dropping the rod every time there's a strong pull on the end you'll go through a LOT of rods. Shock and alarm are perfectly adequate to explain why he would continue to hold it even after being thrown from the boat.

How did the drill suddenly work perfectly after being blown up and shorted out?
It didn't blow up; the oil blew up. The control panel that shorted out is the pump controls; using the board happens after the drill is up and safe they then have to reduce the pressure in the oil cavity to stop the oil coming up; the controls short out and they have to open the safety valve by hand. There's no reason to think that the drill controls have been damaged in anyway. When they restart the drill LDP instructs Cajun Boy to start it by pulling the blue lever. Releasing the drill is achieved with the red lever, whilst Cajun Boy does tap the control panel, this is due more to him not knowing the controls than their being relevant to the drill.

Did the red diver not care that the other guy tried to drown him by the car?
He doesn't know; he got hit from behind.

Why does KS need scuba gear to collect water samples?
Fear of drowning? Plus, she's not collecting water samples, she's collecting sample lobsters, they tend to live on the river bed.

Anyone know how hard it is to strike oil in 10 feet of swamp water?
I would imagine that's why there are prospecting rigs wandering up and down the river.

did the police not notice the smoke and explosions coming from upsteam?
Louisiana is pretty big, and the police characters do state that they are keeping an eye on things near the mouth of the river, whilst LDP et al have gone a long way upstream, so, basically, no, don't see a problem here. Besides a Louisiana police person who responded to gunfire and smoke would be unusual at best.

sure looked like a great white to me (although bull shark line was funny)?
Yes, it did. With a blunted nose, though. I assume that in tests most people who think killer shark picture whitey, and this film hardly attempted to appeal to the more cerebral crowd.

coolio was rediculous - what a stereotype gansta.
Well, yes, but Coolio IS a stereotype gangsta.

wasn't coolio holding KS when the boat blew up - he dies, she's unharmed.
Nope. Coolio is eaten by the shark. Kristy Swanson is, at that point in time, on the oil rig's crane.

why is this rated R?
Violence and swearing, I'd imagine, there's easily more than enough of both to qualify.

worst movie I've seen in a long time.
Well, I gotta say in all fairness the points you raised seem to indicate you really weren't paying attention. Whilst that's understandable, it IS a ghastly film, it doesn't seem entirely fair to rail against it in this point by point fashion if you didn't really watch it.

Personally it isn't the worst film I've seen in a long time. It's actually not even the worst film I've seen today, but then I also watched (for the same reason - I collect shark films) My Super Ex-Girlfriend, which had fifty times the budget a real special effects studio and A-list actors but was still worse, just, than Red Water.

I love this movie. And, I LOVE it when people point out other people who get things wrong and Belzediel you did exactly!!!! Thank you. The one thing, if I may add, where the Op talked about the sark looking like a Great White, well, it was a Bull Shark. Which, I know you know, but a Bull shark is as far as we know the only man eater to be able to live in fresh water. I have (and am watching now) the movie, and the shark in no way resembles a great white. But, it is nice to see another person on here who really watches a film as closely as you did. Nice job, I was about to answer the questions of the OP, but when I saw you hit it on the head.....no reason too! Thanks
